About the Item
Series: People
Location : Papua New Guinea
Traditional scarification in communities along the Sepik river in Papua New Guinea venerate the power of the crocodile.
During the wagan initiation ceremony which celebrates the return of the ancestral crocodile, young men are initiated into manhood. The skin on the chest, back and buttocks of the initiate is cut with a bamboo sliver to test their physical strength and self-discipline. The scars, when healed, represent the teeth marks of the crocodile that has swallowed the initiates who are reborn as crocodile-men.
Stuart Redler’s black and white images use bold contrast to emphasize both structure and emotion.
The tones of his archival prints are beautifully nuanced and rich.

photo print is mounted onto aluminum composite for archival support and stability,
