Terry O'Neill
Terry O'Neill - Faye Dunaway on Table, Photography 1977, Printed After

1977

About the Item

The morning of March 29th, 1977, an iconic image of Hollywood was born. For every photo you know, there’s likely to be at least a dozen other shots from that same moment. Such is the case with the iconic image of Faye Dunaway. As Terry O’Neill remembered: “We met a few weeks before and struck up a friendship. She was the odds-on favorite to win an Oscar for her astonishing performance in ‘Network’. I was asked to take a photo of the winner, so I convinced Faye to meet me at the pool first thing next morning. I didn’t want to take the expected photo; the one with the actor holding the award, moments after, with a stunned expression. I wanted to capture something different. “I somehow convinced Faye to agree.” As the legend goes, Terry convinced Faye to meet him by the pool at The Beverly Hills Hotel as early as possible the morning after the Academy Awards. True to her word, she appeared on time at the break of dawn having had barely a minute’s sleep. Terry charmed the staff to let them use the pool for an hour and while he scattered the morning’s papers at her feet, all trumpeting her success. Faye arrived, sat in the chair and placed her golden statue on the table. And with a few snaps, an iconic image was born. “The other shots are just as interesting. I had her move around the table a bit, asked her to stand up, zoomed out so you could see the palm trees in the distance, and then reclined the chair so she could lie down. She even changed her wardrobe at one point, from her silk dressing gown to a sharp white suit. I wanted to capture that moment, the morning after. The idea was to capture that moment when the actor wakes up and it dawns on them that, overnight, they’ve not only become a star, but their entire life just changed. This is that moment of realization.” Edition of 50 Numbered Prints Per Size and 10 Artist Proofs Per Size Available Posthumous Edition: C-Type Print Sizes: 16" x 20" 20" x 24" 30" x 30" 40" x 40" Your certificate of authenticity will be shipped separately from your print and in most cases will ship directly from the gallery. #112, 1970s Nightclubs of Chicago South Side - Rare Vintage Silver Gelatin Print
Located in London, GB
“I walked into a timeless place … full of supporting actors and actresses of every conceivable role,” Abramson wrote in Light: On the South Side, published by Chicago’s Numero Group in 2009. “Brassai, who photographed nocturnal Paris around 1930, had always been one of my favourite. Having seen, his pictures and, later, read about his experiences, I was fascinated by the implied romance with which he viewed his photography. (…) When I photographed on the South Side, especially in Peppers Hideout, it was very much in recognition of a Brassai–type world. Whether it be ambiance, gestures, or dress, there seemed to be a direct correlation with the Parisian bistros and dance halls that Brassai had photographed.” - Michael Abramson, “Black Night Clubs of Chicago’s South Side”, May 1977. About the Photographer: Michael L Abramson was born in New Jersey in 1948, the late American photographer graduated with Master of Photography from Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1977. His work was regularly featured in Time, New York Times, Newsweek, People, Forbes, Harpers, Wall Street Journal and other popular American and international magazines. He was a highly sought after commercial portrait photographer and photojournalist. His subjects comprised celebrities, prominent stars from sport, politics and the entertainment industry included Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs, Steven Spielberg, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and many more. Yet it was his 1970s series documenting the Chicago South side club scene that made Abramson’s name. Influenced by Brassaï’s photographs of the 1920s Paris, Abramson caught the stylish nightlife of the funk and soul era in full, alluring swing. His work was exhibited frequently since 1978, including a solo show at Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, in 2014 and in the same year the group show on American Photography since 1950 at Madison Museum of Contemporary Arts (US). Following Abramson’s death in 2011 a new book entitled Gotta Go Gotta Flow: Life, Love, and Lust From Chicago’s South Side was released by Chicago-based Chicago City...
