Le Café de France à L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 1979 by Willy Ronis is a gelatin silver later print, measuring 11.8" x 15.75". Signed recto (on front), titled, dated with photographer's copyright stamp on verso (back) and printer stamp from 2001.

Interested in “ordinary people with ordinary lives,” Willy Ronis was among the postwar French photographers who spent his career roaming the streets of Paris, photographing people in love, at work, and at play. Like his French photography compatriots Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Brassaï, Willy Ronis (1910-2009) was a central figure in the “humanist photography” movement, which celebrated poetry in everyday life. Ronis became the first French staff photographer for LIFE Magazine, with work included in Edward Steichen’s “Five French Photographers” (1951) and “The Family of Man” (1955) exhibitions. In 1979 he was awarded the Grand Prix des Arts et Lettres for Photography by the Minister for Culture. Ronis also won the Prix Nadar in 1981 for his photobook, Sur le fil du hazard. In 2005–2006 Paris City Hall held Willy Ronis in Paris, a retrospective exhibition of his work, that had more than 500,000 visitors.

Willy Ronis
Claiming interest in “ordinary people with ordinary lives,” Willy Ronis was among the foremost postwar French photographers, who spent his career roaming the Parisian streets capturing people in love, at work, and at play in lyrical black-and-white images. Like his colleagues Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Brassaï, he was a central figure in the “humanist photography” movement, celebrating the poetry in the everyday in warm, witty images. “I have never sought out the extraordinary or the scoop,” he once said. “The beauty of the ordinary was always the source of my greatest emotions.” Ronis honed his sense of proportion and composition working in his parents’ photography studio. He holds the distinction of being the first French staff photographer for LIFE Magazine, and his work was included in Edward Steichen’s seminal “Five French Photographers” (1951) and “The Family of Man” (1955) exhibitions.

Artist's Bio:
As a visual artist, Roberta Fineberg (RF) focuses on the themes of serendipity, inventiveness, and the development of ideas for her photography, video, installations, works on paper, and painting. Drawn to experimentation, she explores diverse mediums and concepts such as the ephemeral (Butterfly Series), stolen moments (documentary photography), play, timelessness, the enduring, and the significance of matter.
RF, living in New York City, began her career as an editorial photographer while studying in Paris. In France she contributed both photography and writing to publications, landing a column (photos and text) with The Saturday Review while exhibiting photographs in public spaces. Roberta Fineberg’s freelance photography appeared in Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, Paris Match, L’Officiel Femme, Ms, Weltwoche, Vanguardia, among others with images licensed through stock agencies. Photographs were selected for cover art at W.W. Norton, St. Martin’s Press, Harcourt, Bookspan, Simon & Schuster, etc. Print Regional Design Annual New York (2003) awarded her for book jacket photography for If Wishes Were Horses. In 1997 Macmillan published City Riders: A Story of Riding and Friendship her first book of black-and-white photographs and a story about three teenage girls in the 1990s who rode horses at the now-defunct Claremont Riding Academy and oldest stable in New York City.
In 2023, RF created an interactive installation, works on paper on the female body, in a public space. In July 2022, Fineberg’s Double Helix was included in a Sotheby’s auction in New York City and exhibited in the preview show Contemporary Discoveries.
