Albert Watson was born 1942 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
He currently lives and works in New York. A student of the famous Royal College of Art in London Albert Watson (born 1942) is a Scottish photographer well known for his fashion, celebrity, and art photography, having shot over 200 Vogue and 40 Rolling Stone covers since the mid-1970s. His photographs are signature, classical, and bold, and in our world of manipulation, Watson prefers the enlargers and the trays; an artist who greatly enriches our perception with his unique photographic view. Photo District News named Watson one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time, along with Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, among others.
Presented in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide Watson has won numerous awards, including a Lucie Award, a Grammy Award, the Hasselblad Masters Award, and three ANDY Awards. He was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) in recognition of a sustained, significant contribution to the art of photography in 2010.

Albert Watson has captured the perfect image of A-listers, from pop superstars to presidents, in some of the world’s most exotic locations. But, the photographer admits, he has never been happier than hunkered down in the wind and rain of Skye, framing the wild beauty of one of Scotland’s most spectacular islands. Albert lives in New York but a holiday in Skye many years ago made him want to come back and capture it on film. 'It stayed with me as being an unusual, interesting and charismatic place and I wanted to shoot the landscapes,' Albert said. “It was a personal project and a real case of getting back to my roots. I planned it for two years and I went in with a complete back-up crew to help me. 'I was there for six weeks and we did 12 hours every single day. We got up in the dark and finished in the dark.' Such is Albert’s attention to detail, he spent three days just photographing the surface of lochs as the wind changed the patterns on the water. 'I was looking for something mysterious that had atmosphere. I deliberately went in October and November because I was hoping for bad weather – and of course I got it. I find blue sky with white fluffy clouds deadly when it comes to creating a powerful landscape and I was looking for wind and rain and mist.'

Albert Watson
Albert Watson studied graphic design before becoming a photographer. His manipulation of contrast and superior sense of composition distinguish his portraits of celebrities and models. With an emphasis on the formal and sculptural properties of his sitters' bodies, Watson's images have not only appeared in numerous American and European fashion magazines but also in museum and gallery exhibitions.
In Watson’s famous nude photographs of Kate Moss taken on her 18th birthday in 1993, the model's spine pokes through the skin of her curved back, like the scales of a dinosaur, while the right side of her body is entirely shaded. In a 1989 portrait, Naomi Campbell's head is silhouetted against a grey surface, while her bare shoulders and the arch of her back are illuminated. In 2010, he was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship.
