About the photo:
Aldara Ortega’s Flow Like Water shows the medium of water encasing and expressing its feminine nature. It takes in and caresses the dancer as she moves her limbs to embrace herself and the beauty of her being. Ortega tends to focus her photographs on the female form because she sees herself in what she is creating. Flow Like Water awakens the divine, creative, and nurturing feminine power in the viewer and reminds us to cultivate and tend to these aspects within themselves.
About the Series:
The series Freedom and Confinement was photographed pre-pandemic but as the world shut down and Ortega was forced to get physically and mentally closer to her photographs. While spending more time with herself and her artwork, she discovered that these three pictures encapsulate a lesson we all had to learn: how to break free of confinement by using the freedom of your mind. The idea of growing to be at ease in small spaces was reflected for Ortega in her experience capturing these photos. Taken in a small silver jacuzzi located in Manhattan, New York, Ortega and her models had to find a way to capture expansiveness, tranquility, and the feeling of breaking free. Flow Like Water, Freedom 2, and Seeing Through the Veil eventually came together to reveal what the freedom of Ortega’s mind can express despite the confinements of space.
About the Artist:
Aldara Ortega, a self-taught photographer based in New York City, over a decade ago, she began experimenting with the underwater world to find an escape from urban life. Her work is a visual journey of self-discovery, freedom and pure expression of the body, mind, and heart. It is the result of the transformational experience of being submerged in water, letting go and reconnecting with the raw, liberated, inner self.
Through her underwater portraits of women, she builds an intricate storyline of personal narratives offering the viewer glimpses of her personal search to honor the feminine. She invites you to intimately connect with the work and elicit feelings of strength, boldness, sensuality, liberation and empowerment.

Aldara Ortega
Aldara Ortega was born in Madrid, Spain and received her degree from the Fashion Design Superior Center. A self-taught photographer and mixed media artist, she merges her own reflective experiences with those of her subjects, creating underwater light-filled works. Ortega first explored the effects of underwater photography after moving to New York in 2009.

Aldara Ortega’s series Agua Viva was an entirely experimental journey brought together by the serendipity of life, motion, and emotion. Ortega found the model featured in these photos at an art fair where she was spellbound by her work with silks. The two met in Miami and brought to life a series of three photographs entitled, Liquid Passion, El Beso, and Poderosa Nereida. Within these masterpieces Ortega discovered her passion for not capturing poses, but motion and how looking closely at the in-between moments of life can bring to light undiscovered emotions.
