About the Item

Please note: Artwork will be on display through February 25, 2024 and will be shipped to collectors within two weeks following the closing of the exhibition. "Kumimi Beach, Molokai" is an original artwork by Anna Tas and Diane Burko made of a backlit archival pigment print with lenticular lens in a silver frame, as pictured. The piece is lenticular––transitioning and creating the look of movement as the viewer moves past––which may be viewed in the images and the video. The first set of images were taken in a well-lit room, and the second set in a room without light to show the effect of the lightbox. This lenticular photograph measures 13.5 inches x 13.5 inches and is an edition of 10. This series was a collaboration between Anna Tas and well-known artist, Diane Burko, as part of her current “Kai’Apapa” (to the reefs) project. These circular presentations are referential - providing multiple interpretations from a “portal” view underwater to an aerial perspective from a satellite, or a microscopic glance into the movements of polyps - the living organisms of a coral. The resulting images, back-lit with LEDs, are both beautiful and compelling, physically and emotionally engaging the viewer, and furthering the conversation about how the natural world is impacted by climate change. This series draws from drone and go-pro footage (shot by Diane Burko on location), as well material provided by scientists at the Hawaiian Institute of Marine Biology and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Diane Burko's career has spanned more than 40 years, and she is renowned for investigating monumental and geological phenomena throughout the world - both on the ground and from the air. Her work connects art and science, and in her own words, she is "inviting audiences to emotionally engage with environmental change where scientific data alone may leave many perplexed.” These lenticular pieces premiered as part of Diane Burko's exhibition, “Endangered: From Glaciers to Reefs”, on display at the National Academy of Sciences, in Washington D.C., 15th August 2018 – 31st January 2019 Anna Tas is a British-born artist, who currently lives in the United States. Anna Tas’s work has been described as rather ambiguous and conceptual, allowing the audience to interpret what they see in their own way, as well as stimulating discussion about how we see and how images persist in our minds. “I always feel rather uncomfortable talking directly about my work – not necessarily because I’m worried what people will think of me, but rather more that I enjoy the dialogue that comes from a viewer who is seeing the work from their point of view, rather than mine, someone who has no preconceived idea of what it is that I am trying to talk about […] I have no answers, no judgment, just questions. I am drawn to looking at why we think what we think, how we develop and learn to decode what we see, and assign certain values (for want of a better word) without being really conscious that this is what we do. I am part of something, yet also apart from it – observing, watching, questioning, and wondering."
