About the Item
ARTEMIS ANTIPPAS was raised in the French Quarter. From a very early age, she became consumed with the wildness that was New Orleans.
The work Antippas makes is a reflection of her intense connection to the city and her various obsessions – obsession with party decorations, with hoarding her grandmother’s used lipsticks and holey pantyhose, with her family’s Greek noses, with soccer, with monthly visits to the Dollar Tree, with New Orleans and New Orleanians’ unrelenting tendencies of fete and food, with religious garb, retail shopping and shoppers, with her intimate relationship with her late cat Dalila, Popeyes employees, patrons and fried chicken, cotton candy and things in multiples…
Antippas’ studio practice revolves around these obsessions as well as her compulsive investigation into human behavior and interaction. For her, the adventure and exploration throughout the working process are equally as exciting as the finished work itself.
