About the Item
This Water series comes out of Schmidt's life long fascination with water and the color blue.
Having grown up in Greece as the daughter of an archeologist, Schmidt spent 3 months out of the year on the Greek island called Samos. Schmidt recalls all of the primal elements and shapes seemed to come together on the island.
The long lines of the horizon, the white and blue geometries of the buildings and the sound of the water formed her way of perceiving primary space.
Water can be seen as the absence and the presence of space; there is something mesmerizing and elemental about water.
Bastienne Schmidt is a mixed media artist working with photography, painting and large scale drawings. She was born in Germany, raised in Greece and Italy and has lived in New York for the past 20 years.
