About the Item
Beauty, history, and the female form represent the core tenets of Carla van de Puttelaar’s photographs. According to the artist, “The female body is my source of inspiration,” she once explained. “I have my own tale to tell, which is different from [the] nude images the media want to show. . . . The differences in women’s bodies . . . show their individuality and their many different forms of beauty.”
THE CRANACH SERIES
“…Carla van de Puttelaar’s models are unaware of our presence. Their eyes are not only closed, but turned away as well. Despite their inaccessible gazes, they are not asleep. They are very much engaged in a vital world of their own private thoughts, which they keep all to themselves. As such van de Puttelaar’s women are far away. Just as we do not have the guts to come closer to Cranach’s Venus the Temptress, we dare not disturb these young women, entirely wrapped up in their inner and outer beauty.”
