About the Item

Edition of 5 Carolyn'Monastra's series called "lovely, dark and deep,” excerpted from Robert Frost poem, explores the natural wonders of the wilderness. Dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes, the color photographs in this ongoing series have painterly, atmospheric hues. Each image is an edition of 5 and comes in two sizes: 30" x 38" or 16" x 20". lovely, dark and deep (2005 - 2010) Mysterious twilit landscapes I draw from the fragmentary space of dreams and my experiences with the environment to discover and create mystery in the natural world. Whereas most landscape photographers seek out grand sweeping vistas, with this project,I am interested in the smaller, sometimes disquieting worlds that exist off the beaten path. It is a darker, enigmatic beauty to which I am drawn -that of the shadowy forests of Hansel and Gretel not the pristine views of Ansel Adams. These long twilit exposures, taken with a large format film camera, exemplify both the seduction and apprehension the woods hold for me during the blue hour. As dusk falls, objects become hazy and sounds amplified. In these dense lush images, punctuated byoverlapping areas of clarity and haziness, the world is a more mystifying but still

Révélations 1
By Patrick Beaulieu
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Patrick Beaulieu’s most recent project Révélations uses installation and digital prints to explore how artistic manipulation can create shifts in one’s expectations of the visual experience. Beaulieu clearly acknowledges his artistic presence in the work through mechanical and digital manipulation of the objects and images he presents. He becomes more than a passive observer and recorder of his physical world; the alteration of conventional photographs implants his voice and vision into the work. This approach directly addresses and contrasts artistic practices which seek to conceal the artist’s hand. His method diverges from those that attempt to present an uninterrupted and uncontaminated record, such as some documentary and straight photography. In using these stylized techniques, Beaulieu makes a palpable proclamation regarding the subjective and flexible condition of images. In Révélations, images of trees, moss, leaves and other natural objects are presented in strict colour schemes of muted grays, browns and greens. Though these colours are familiar components of the natural world that we experience in day-to-day life and in photographs of nature...
