David Halliday
American, Unknown (Graphic, Vintage Style Red, White, Blue Patriotic Triptych)

2012

About the Item

Mounted archival pigment print photographs on pure cotton rag paper Artist made natural wood shadow box frames with AR non glare glass 63.5 x 24.5 inches hung vertically Edition 1 of 3 This graphic triptych consists of three archival pigment print photographs taken by David Halliday in 2012. The bright red, white, and blue color patterns are specific to each panel yet cohesive as a complete group. The triptych consists of three framed photographs in different sizes. The largest print at the bottom of the installation is of an old portrait painting with a sky blue background that has faded and peeled away. The middle photograph consists of a beige and vivid red canvas, while the smallest print is of a vintage dark blue canvas with a large white star. Together, the prints represent a patriotic image of a fading, old-style America. The prints are complimented by natural wood shadow box frames with AR non glare glass, which are handmade by the artist. Together the imagery demonstrates a romanticism for a fading old-town America. The triptych can be exhibited horizontally or vertically and is complimented with natural wood frames made by the artist. About the work: David Halliday reaches into his archives of images to compile a selection of both sepia toned photographs mixed with more recent color works; each are iconic representations of the most ordinary objects of everyday life. Together they represent a fading essence of things quintessentially ‘American’. For the artist, beauty and nostalgia are pervasive, but lamentation has its role as well. About the artist: David Halliday first gained renown for his sepia-toned silver prints of elegant, meticulously-composed still lifes. His more recent color work maintains the same intimate and simple beauty but also creates a visceral connection for the viewer. Like a painter, he emphasizes volumes, balances, texture and areas of subtle shading. Born in Glen Cove, New York in 1958, Halliday attended Syracuse University and pursued further studies under the tutelage of Arnold Newman. He has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. In 2002, the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans exhibited a retrospective of his work and in 2012, he exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans. Halliday’s work is included in numerous public and private collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the New Britain Museum of Art.

Five Fish (Color Food Still Life Photograph of Fish on Tabletop with Mint Green)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
Formalist style color still life photograph of five sardine fish on a white marble tabletop with a mint green background "Five Fish", 2007 Archival pigment print, edition of 25 Image size: 11 x 14 inches 17 x 21 inches with light wood frame with non-glare glass and 8-ply white mat Excellent condition, ready to hang as is Halliday captures the beauty of a traditional still life with a contemporary spin. Here 5 fish lay on a table against a light green background. The print is part of an edition of 25, is currently framed in a light wood frame with non-glare glass and an 8-ply white mat. The artist's signature is located on the back and front. About the Artist: David Halliday's photographs are about beauty, pure and simple. His primary subjects are carefully composed still lifes, portraits and landscapes which he shoots in black and white film with only natural light. He is a purist behind the lens, rarely manipulating his negatives in any way, and a master in the darkroom. His work has an ethereal quality that's translated not only through the subject, but also by the warm colors and sepia tones he uses in his printing. More about the work: A master of light, David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Celebrated for his ‘purist’ eye, he poetically captures the nude male body in a selection of sepia-toned prints from 1996. Rarely revealing the model's face, Halliday prefers to focus on the natural drape of limbs, soft folds of flawless skin, and curvature of the spine. Overall, a stunningly intimate portrayal of the male form done with elegance and charm. Ceramic Pitcher (Still Life Photograph of Lemons, Olives, Zucchini, & Chestnuts)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary color still life photograph of a ceramic pitcher with assorted fruits and vegetables Archival pigment print, ed. of 25 15 x 19.5 inches unframed Signed and editioned, verso In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of everyday life with a contemporary still life image of various objects and vegetation arranged on a wooden plank. The imagery calls to mind a Baroque still life, highlighting the beauty and simplicity found in every day objects. Here a sienna colored ceramic pitcher is captured besides an arrangement of yellow lemons, curly green zucchini, black olives, and brown nuts. The pop of white from the napkin in addition to the stark black background accentuates the simplistic color and shapes of the fruits and vegetables. About the Artist: David Halliday's photographs are about beauty, pure and simple. His primary subjects are carefully composed still lifes, portraits and landscapes which he shoots in black and white film with only natural light. Plaster Clouds (Still Life Photograph of Light Orange Wall with White Plaster)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary still life photograph of faint orange wall with white plaster patches archival pigment print, ed 2 of 10 22.25 x 40 inches unframed 28.75 x 46 inches in dark wood frame with non-glare glass In this series, Halliday captures the interiors of his home and studio. The photograph depicts a light orange painted wall with white plaster patches over a mantelpiece. The artist likens the patches to clouds hovering over a horizon. Light blue styrofoam resting in the foreground provides an elegant detail of color. This still life photograph is complimented with a dark wood frame with non-glare glass. About the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior...

Store Window. Marfa, TX
By David Saxe
Located in Hudson, NY
David Saxe - “Photography has always been the simple act of looking and being inspired to strip the unnecessary elements from the scene and frame the image down in a way to discover what is not apparent on the surface. My photographs are as much about me as what I am seeing: In Southern California, 2010 is a perfect example of this process of seeing. When I first noticed this scene, it was a simple mural of a whale on a wall. After looking at it for a while I realized that by eliminating the sky and foreground from the image the whale now had an undulating rhythm and movement. In another image Restaurant Hostess, Palm Beach, FL 2012, I would go to this restaurant every week and sit in the bar behind the reception area. One day, I turned around and saw the back of a woman. Through this process of deductive framing, the image became one of dark shadows rhythmically trickling down her back interwoven with the tattoo of the lizard. David Saxe was born in Montreal, Québec, Canada in 1943 and studied fine art at l’ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal. He started taking pictures in 1970, after being influenced by the work of Robert Frank, and Henri Cartier Bresson. About 10 years ago, he decided to take a workshop with Constantine Manos...
