About the Item

Glenlivet 162, limited edition color photograph, signed and numbered For much of my adult life, photography has provided me a forum to communicate my past & present, my humor & concerns, my observations & explorations. It has undeniably changed the way I see the world; how I look at individuals, places, or objects. Although my subject matter varies, my images tend to focus on the individual nature of objects (and occasionally people) and the unique qualities that each possesses. My images often provide a voice to objects that are ignored and are frequently overlooked or taken for granted These images are created with the small amount of single malt Scotch left in a glass after most of it has been consumed. The alcohol dries and leaves the sediment in various patterns. The amount of Scotch needed to create these images averages 2-3 drops. If a person can see the amber color of the whisky, they've left too much. It’s a little like snowflakes in that every time the Scotch dries, the glass yields different patterns and results. I have used different color lights to add ‘life’ to the bottom of the glass, creating the illusion of landscape, terrestrial or extraterrestrial. Some of the images reference the celestial, as if the image was taken of space; something that the Hubble telescope may have taken or an image taken from space looking down on Earth. The circular image references a drinking glass, typically circular, and what the consumer might see if they were to look at the bottom of the glass after the scotch has dried. A technical note about this project. The images were titled with the specific Scotch that the rings were created with. The number is a 3-digit number that has nothing to do with the age of the scotch. Merely a number to help differentiate between images. – Ernie Button

"Church Dome" color photograph, rose pink abstract wall, town road landscape
By Phillip Buehler
Located in New York, NY
18"x24", signed, editioned color photograph. The rose pink textured wall of the distressed background in this photograph complements pinkish reds of the road depicted in the rural town landscape painting, which was selected and placed by the artist to have this interaction. The red tones in horizontal stripes of the exposed wood lathing strips on the wall that the painting is hung, add to the visual texture with the white paint under the peeling pink paint. Time and age have created an image of beautiful decay with the cracked and peeling paint, which creates an amazing visual backdrop to the painting. The pairing of the two in this photograph compliment each other on a sensory level and bring out thoughts of nostalgia and longing. Phillip Buehler is a New York based photographer who documents the deterioration and remnants of neglected architecture constructed in the recent past. He is arguably the first to coin the neologism “modern ruins”. His photographs published in “Woody Guthrie’s Wardy Forty,” have won numerous awards, documenting the singer/songwriter/activist’s life at Greystone Park Psychiatric. He received his BA at Rutgers University and his MFA in photography at School of Visual Arts. Phillip Buehler has been featured in Art in America, The New York Times, Art News, The Art Newspaper, Wall Street Journal, American Photo Magazine, The Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Gothamist, Art F City, The Sun, ABC, CNN, and numerous other publications.
