Jerry Siegel
"Green (Leaf Wall)" - Southern Documentary Photography - Christenberry

2020

About the Item

"Green (Leaf Wall)" features hues of green. This is a framed print. Jerry Siegel is inspired by the work of William Christenberry, Sally Mann, Andrew Moore, Walker Evans and Jim Dow. Atlanta-based photographer Jerry Siegel was born and raised in Selma, Alabama. He is a documentary and portrait photographer with a focus on the South. For “ELEMENTAL,” Jerry presents a series of photographs titled “Chromatics.” With the world moving so fast around us, it’s hard to slow down and really absorb the colors and textures of everyday life. In this series of photographs, Jerry challenged himself to slow down and to take a closer look at the world around him. This series of photographs marvel at the mundane - the brilliant colors and textures that surround us. Each image was taken from his drivers’ seat window, a perspective not uncommon to all of us. Jerry graduated from the Arts Institute of Atlanta and has published two monographs, “Facing South: Portraits of Southern Artists,” and "Black Belt Color," featuring images from decades of documenting his hometown of Selma, Alabama, and the surrounding area. His photographs are in many private and corporate collections, including those of the Ogden Museum of Art, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and eleven other southeastern US museums.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
