About the Item

Jung LEE (*1972, South Korea) Have You Ever Loved Me?, 2010 C-Type Print, Diasec Sheet 125 x 100 cm (49 1/4 x 39 3/8 in.) Frame 127,3 x 102,4 x 3,2 cm (50 1/8 x 40 3/8 x 1 1/4 in.) Edition of 5, plus 2 AP; Ed. no. 5/5 – Biography Jung Lee is a Korean artist born in 1972 Seoul and is best known for her photographs of text-based neon light installations set directly into the landscape. With contrasting sentimental phrases juxtaposed with stark layouts of deserted plains or barren snow fields, she makes strong various emotional statements. One of her sources of inspiration for many of her artworks is Roland Barthes's book 'A lover's discourse'. Lee slows everything down patiently analysing that most intense and overwhelming of states, unanswered desire – the language of complete love and the deep solitary state it throws the lover into. She collects clichéd expressions of love and hatred such as ‘How could you do this to me?’ and ‘I still remember’ and gives them resonance in form of powerful proclamations. Jung Lee received her M.A. in Photography from the Royal College of Art, UK and her B.A. with honors in Photography from Kent Institute of Art & Design, UK. She also received a B.A. with honors in Mass Communication & Journalism from Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea. Jung Lee currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea. – Aporia 'Aporia' means 'coming to a dead end' in Greek. The cry for love faintly spreading across the desolate places indicates the dead end of 'love' that cannot be solved with logic and philosophy. Jung Lee expects viewers to have a short but impressive trip daydreaming of their own love stories through this combination of neon, landscape and text. The series 'Aporia' takes its motif from 'A Lover's Discourse' by Roland Barthes. In this essay, Barthes discusses the dilemma experienced by people who fall in love. If you fall in love, your beloved becomes a sort of mystery so that you will ceaselessly try to figure out the reasons for your feelings for him or her and to interpret them. The desire to express your love produces lies and conflicts and leads to a dead end that is a love. As you endlessly consume the trite words of love, the object of your affection will eventually become the love itself instead of love. The sweet nothings being reiterated in the air, unable to reach anyone between you and me, seem to ironically reveal the solitude and sorrow of people in contemporary society. Jung Lee began imaging the emptiness and lonesomeness behind the glowing neon signs of the city. And she started collecting the expressions of love and hatred that can be commonly found on the internet, TV or movies. What would happen if you took those common phrases into unknown deserted places? She created text with neon and placed them in this type of landscape. These hackneyed and banal phrases meet the deserted places – ushering you into a beautifully sparking moment. – Jung Lee, Colour Photography, Landscape, Installation, Neon, Light, Typography, Love, Abstract, Nature, Sculpture, Large Format, Diasec

Edition of 9 plus 2 artist's proofs (#2/9) print only Originally from Excelsior, Minnesota, Erik Madigan Heck (*1983) is one of the youngest and most promising American fashion photographers of the contemporary art scene. In his relatively short career the artist developed a personal way of looking at fashion, as Nathalie Herschdorfer underlines in her essay "Minimal and pure: Erik Madigan Heck fashion photographs". His work is characterized by a clear and distinctive treatment of colours and patterns, which makes it unequivocal. "Heck’s photographs push the concept to new limits, creating imagery that goes beyond traditional fashion photography. Meticulously constructed and enhanced with bright colours, blurring the line between the clothes and the background, his images play with this idea of ‘future’ silhouettes". – Nathalie Herschdorfer In 2017 Heck published his first monograph with Thames & Hudson and Abrams Books titled 'Old Future'. In his 'Old Future' series Madigan Heck explores the intersection of photography and painting as he borrows from and bends the genres of fashion photography, landscape painting and portraiture. Madigan Heck is a regular contributor to The New York Times...
