Mark Harvey
Coal Tit by Mark Harvey 30" x 30" C-type Photograph Print Only

2019

About the Item

Coal Tit is part of the In Flight collection, a series of portraits of the wild birds taken in the gardens of Mark Harvey's home in Norfolk, England. At a mere 9.2 grams there is an immense amount of beauty packed into this delicate little coal tit. The white stripe over the head and small size distinguishes the coal tit from the great tit as well as possessing the most pleasing turquoise across the back. The light has wrapped around this bird to give a lovely rounded form and metallic shimmer from the wings. Limited Edition of 15 - The edition numbers are fixed to 15 prints and divided across the four print sizes. Please note the price of the artwork will increase as the prints sell out and prices are updated on a regular basis. Presentation - C-type print Signed and numbered by the artist on the print face Certificate of Authenticity - Each print is provided with a unique, signed, numbered and embossed certificate of authenticity. Borders - Each unframed print will have a border added of 4 inches/10cm with 4.5 inches/12.5cm at the base to the print, to allow for a range of framing options. This is in addition to the print size shown. Size - Printed area 30" x 30". Total size with borders 38" x 38.5". IN FLIGHT Gliding gracefully through the air, the birds in Mark Harvey’s majestic series, In Flight, look almost heavenly. Pictured against brooding skies, the balletic creatures, at once fragile and mighty, appear to have danced their way into view. They are oblivious to our gaze, free spirits whose path is completely their own. For a moment, they are suspended in mid-air, frozen forever by the photographer’s camera. Mark encountered the birds close to his home in the Norfolk Broads in spring 2020. He photographed them using a scaled down version of a lighting set-up he normally uses to photograph horses, making use of mini flashes to make the colours and textures of the birds’ wings and bodies ‘pop’. Deliberately isolating the birds from their surroundings, his intention was to capture moments not usually seen and for the viewer to feel as though they can reach out and touch them. Indeed, there is an intimacy to these candid bird portraits that is enhanced by the careful use of directional lighting. To be able to show such incredible shapes in razor sharp detail was a key objective, the ultimate aim being to show these Common British birds – among them, goldfinches, blue tits, great tits and starlings – in a new light. It is almost as though they have been elevated to a higher plane. We encounter birds every day, but rarely do we stop and really study them. They are so tiny and look so insignificant we don’t realise how glorious they are. Only when they’re put in the spotlight do they come to life in the most brilliant, breathtaking way.
