Nick Knight is among the world’s most influential and visionary photographers. He has worked on a range of often controversial issues during his career – from racism, disability, ageism, and more recently fat-ism. He continually challenges conventional ideals of beauty.
Knight made fashion history in November 1993 by adapting ring-flash photography to capture Linda Evangelista for a landmark, post-grunge cover of British Vogue. Since then, his work has graced no fewer than 36 covers. He has shot advertising campaigns for Jil Sander, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior to name a few. He has also shot record covers for David Bowie, Paul Weller, George Michael and Massive Attack.
Knight’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Saatchi Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery, the Hayward Gallery and recently the Tate Modern. Knight has also turned his hand to directing music videos - Pagean Poetry by Björk in 2001 being his first and, most recently, Kanye West’s Bound 2. He directed the video for Lady Gaga’s hit single Born This Way in 2011. Both the song and the video aimed to empower and show solidarity within minority groups, a common theme in Knight’s work.
The work is one of a recently published series of prints that took 10 years to produce due to the long development process they triggered. Inspired by 16th century still lifes, Knight applied various techniques such as heat and exposure to a photograph during the developing process, creating a picture with a wonderful effect in which the colours seemed to magically merge and develop a life of their own.
Knight began this project when he and his wife were given access to the barium of the Natural History Museum in 1993 for his installation "Plant Power" Flora. From the 6 million different species available (it took him 3 years to sift through them all) he made a final selection of 46 specimens and almost 15 years later decided to publish 15 pictures of them for us to view and enjoy. Scroll through our slide show to see the fascinating effects of his wonderful oeuvre.

- back door 48 – Michael Wolf, Cityscape, Hongkong, Street Photography, Pink dogBy Michael WolfLocated in Zurich, CHMichael WOLF (1954 – 2019, Germany) back door 48, 2003 Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemuehle art rag paper 40.6 x 50.8 cm (16 x 20 in.) Edition of 9, plus 2 AP; Ed. no. 2/9 Michael Wolf was born in 1954 in Munich, Germany. He worked and lived in Paris and Hong Kong where he died in April 2019. The focus of Michael Wolf’s work is life in mega-cities. His projects document both the architecture and the vernacular culture of metropolises. Born in Munich, Wolf grew up in Canada, Europe, and the United States, studying at UC Berkeley and at the Folkwang School with Otto Steinert in Essen, Germany. He moved to Hong Kong in 1994, where he worked for eight years as a contract photographer for Stern magazine. Since 2003, Wolf has been focusing on his own projects, publishing over thirty books of his work. His work is held in many permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art in California, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, and M+ in Hong Kong. back door: The dark back alleys that crisscross the city are home to objects that, at first glance, seem to be discarded—the random detritus of the man-made world. Under the scrutiny of Michael Wolf's photographic eye, these objects become fascinating installation pieces, while the abstract patterns of the buildings reveal the beauty and order that underlie the apparent chaos of the city. Thought-provoking texts by Kenneth Baker and Douglas Young explore the choices that people make of lifestyle, form, function, identity, and design, as well as the notion of Hong Kong as a brand. – Art, Cityscape, Architecture, City, Michael Wolf, Street Photography, Colour Photography, Hong Kong, Pink dog...Category

- Blue and WhiteBy Pamela Ellis HawkesLocated in Gloucester, MAPamela Ellis Hawkes's innovative photography revitalizes antique traditions of still life painting with a playful contemporary spirit and a keen eye for seductively mysterious beauty. Her work often exposes viewers' differing expectations from photography and painting, and this surprising parallax illuminates of the changing meanings of artistic images in the visual cultures of the past and the rapidly changing present. This print from the artist’s “Fantastic Flora” series is a photograph captured by a scanner of an artful arrangement of plastic flowers. The series is both an innovative homage to the beauty of the Baroque flower...Category
