Abstracted Flower Still Life Photograph of Antique Vase with White Line Drawing Floral Tulip Bouquet on Navy Blue Tolopea, 1650 A.D., by Bryan Meador Archival Inkjet Print mounted on Sintra with Plexi glass face mount Aluminum bracing on reverse 10 x 8 inches (ed. of 10) wire is installed on the back for easy installation, no framing is necessary additional size available: 20 x 16 inches (ed. of 5) - $750 24 x 20 inches (ed. of 3) - $950 This contemporary still life photograph was created by upstate New York based artist, Bryan Meador. The image features a classical antique metalic vase with delicate floral bouquet of tulips outlined in white. The vase and abstracted flowers are situated on a stark white surface in front of a navy blue background. A subtle shadow from the object is projected onto the background. About the Series: With a background in commercial photography, emerging artist Bryan Meador focuses on the still life genre to explore the two facets of digital imagery – the representation of the image and its manipulation. In a series called Ideographs/Empty Vases, Meador shows how photography and painting coexist in one work. A digital image of an ancient vase is depicted on a white plane against a solid, primary color. Each vase is then filled with line drawings of bouquets in varying arrangements, conveying a silhouette of the floral form. Meador’s work begs to ask why photographic images are so easily accepted as truth, when in fact, there stands the possibility for as much manipulation to the photographed image as there is freedom in painting. Meador earned a BFA from Parsons and currently lives in Kingston, NY. Artist Statement: In the age of codes, data and computerized images, the subject/object relationship in more fraught than ever. An image on a screen, however realistic, has been translated through unknown numbers of non-human languages and technologies. Images that would seems to be a direct view of a landscape or object are therefore products of translations even as they appear to be direct representations of the real. The easiness of the image on the screen allows us to bypass understanding the translations it has been through to reach us. My work is a kind of amplification of the “glitches” and “mistranslations” that we know happen in digital texts and images but can’t always locate: less and identifications of these mutations and more of a celebration. I am to allow the two “logic” of digital images (representation and mutation” to exist in dialogue to create a more questioning view of our relationship to digital images. About the artist: Bryan Meador is an artist from Oklahoma of Cherokee and Irish descent. He lives and works in Upstate New York. Meador earned a BFA from Parsons with honors and worked in commercial photography in New York City after graduation. During this time his love for photography grew, but he became increasingly preoccupied by the unseen manipulations inherent in most commercial work. His photography practice became intertwined with painting as he began to work with the intention of illustrating the creative, abstracted, and non-representational context in which commercial photography is created. His work investigates how photography and computers are changing the way we think about nature, ourselves and how we relate to the world around us.
