About the Item
The First Cut by Robyn Stacey features a large watermelon sitting on a wooden table in this dramatically lit still-life. The handle of a silver knife protrudes out from a cut in the fruit. A chunk of watermelon sits next to the larger fruit below the knife. This graphic scene alludes to acts of aggression, yet the execution appears precise and thoughtful.
This photograph is listed as framed, with the black frame measuring 48 x 64 x 1.5 inches. The size of the photograph is 47.25 x 62.75 inches. This photograph is a C-Print printed on Fujichrome Professional Paper and is AP #2. A signature label is included with this photograph.
As one of Australia's most established and respected photographers, Robyn Stacey has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally since the mid–1980s with group and solo exhibitions in Tokyo, London, New York and Dallas, Texas. In Australia Stacey’s work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions; including Photography: Real and Imagined, National Gallery of Victoria, 2023, Know My Name - Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and nationwide, 2020-2022, Destination Sydney: The Natural World, January - March 2022, Robyn Stacey As Still As Life, solo exhibition at Monash Gallery of Art 2018 and national touring exhibition 2021-22, PHOTO 2021 International Festival of Photography Reconfigured/Rediscovered Melbourne, a major commission by Deutsche Bank Australia, Double Take for the 2017 Sydney Contemporary Art Fair, Magic Mirror for the Perth International Arts Festival, 2017, Magic Object: The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 2016, The Photograph and Australia, Art Gallery of NSW, 2015, and Robyn Stacey: Cloud Land at the Museum of Brisbane, in 2015.
Stacey's work is held in notable public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, the City of Sydney, Samstag Museum, as well as numerous university, corporate and private collections. Her work is studied as part of the curriculum in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.
Three substantial publications, house (2011), museum (2007) and herbarium (2004), captured Stacey's fascination with public archives, and offered unique insights into the collections of Sydney Living Museums, the Macleay Museum at Sydney University and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.
She has been the recipient of major awards, grants and residencies, including a number of Australia Council Visual Arts Board grants and awarded a Samstag Scholarship (1994) to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her artist in residencies include the Sofitel on Collins in Melbourne in 2013, Macleay Museum at Sydney University 2004-6, University of Leiden, the Netherlands 2001-2007, the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney 2001-3, and the National Center for Supercomputuing Applications at the University of Illinois 1993.
