Stefanie Schneider is a photographer whose work transports viewers into dreamlike realms, blurring the lines between daydreams and sleeping fantasies. She captures surreal scenes in the South West of the USA, where reality and imagination intertwine. The people she photographs, the motives behind their actions, and the narratives within her photo series are all elusive and intangible.
Schneider's art deliberately incorporates atmospheric disturbances, creating a narrative that draws viewers into a world of memories and gaps in recollection. She skillfully uses media, but her materials, notably expired Polaroid film, introduce an element of unpredictability. Despite this, Schneider has mastered techniques involving bulk purchases, careful storage, and precise temperature and timing to harness the material’s potential.
One of Schneider's significant works, "Mind Screen," embraces the fragility of reality. Through dreamlike sequences, she juxtaposes the real and the comprehensible with magical realism, leaving the interpretation of the storyline to the viewers. Her art defies categorization, effortlessly blending genres like road movies, acts of violence, and self-sacrifice. Familiar film references, like Wim Wenders' "Paris, Texas" and "Thelma and Louise," are distorted, adding layers of complexity to her creations.
Despite the expired film and unpredictable processes, Schneider's work captivates audiences with its shimmering, unreal scenes. Viewers are entranced, unable to step out of the dreamlike experience, unable to distinguish fact from fiction.
Stefanie Schneider, holding an MFA in Communication Design from Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany, has exhibited her work in prestigious venues such as the Museum for Photography in Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation in Berlin, and Les Rencontres d'Arles, among others.
