Stefanie Schneider’s The Getaway captures the spirit of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, a runaway couple navigating the complexities of survival in the contemporary West. Rooted in the romantic yet dangerous allure of rebellion, the series offers a visually stunning narrative of two lovers against the world, set against expansive desert backdrops and shadowy motel interiors. These scenes are imbued with a sense of urgency, transience, and raw emotion—a testament to Schneider’s unparalleled ability to tell stories through still images.
A signature hallmark of Schneider’s work, the images are created using expired Polaroid film, but this series carries an added layer of poignancy. It is not just any Polaroid film; it is the last of its kind—produced before the collapse of the original Polaroid Corporation and its chemical processes, which have since become impossible to replicate. The film’s imperfections—its hazy light leaks, yellowish hues, and unpredictably beautiful distortions—are more than aesthetic choices; they are artifacts of a medium that can no longer be recreated. Each image becomes a relic of an irreplaceable material history, paralleling the couple’s own fleeting journey through a world that feels equally fragile and transient.
The getaway car, an enduring symbol of freedom and desperation, takes center stage in several frames. Schneider captures the man climbing into its driver’s seat, ready for another chapter of their escape. The chemical mutations of the film lend these moments an almost spectral quality, as though the scenes are both grounded in reality and drifting into memory. This duality invites viewers to question the authenticity of the characters’ escape and reflect on their own desire for freedom in an increasingly constrained modern landscape.
Through The Getaway, Schneider does more than tell a story of two lovers on the run. She memorializes a medium—the now-extinct chemical magic of real Polaroid film—that, like the protagonists of her series, exists outside the bounds of the everyday. This work is a love letter to impermanence, to the wild and untamable West, and to the stories that linger in the spaces between survival and surrender.

Stefanie Schneider's photographs evoke scintillating moments suspended between daydreams and waking reality. Each scene, captured in the southwestern United States, radiates a surreal enchantment. The artist's role appears minimal yet pivotal, providing the decisive impulse that sets the imagery into motion. The figures in her photographs remain as elusive as the motivations behind their actions, and the narratives woven through her sequences are tantalizingly open to interpretation.
Atmospheric disturbances in Schneider's work emerge as the result of a deliberate narrative arrangement, compelling viewers to navigate between visual mementos and the gaps in memory they conjure. Yet, her artistry is no less purposeful in its engagement with medium. Despite the inherent unpredictability of expired Polaroid film, Schneider wields it with calculated intent. The photo-chemical self-developing process, altered by age and decay, transforms the initial exposure into something alien yet mesmerizing. This dysfunction is a cornerstone of MIND SCREEN, a multi-part work that explores the fragility of reality, authenticity, and comprehension.
Schneider juxtaposes this brittleness with a magical realism steeped in chimeras, crafting dreamlike sequences that resist definitive narratives. She entrusts viewers with the responsibility of piecing together presumed storylines, refusing to offer a manual for interpretation. Instead, her work draws us into a realm where the unreal reigns—shimmering scenes that evoke the mirage of a road movie, a moment of violence, or a tragic self-sacrifice.

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
cyan = blue
type = print
Cyanotype is a historic photographic processes, invented in 1842 and used by Anna Atkins–the first female photographer. The process involves coating watercolor paper with light-sensitive chemistry made of iron salts. Photographic negatives are laid on top, exposed in the sunlight, and then washed in water to develop into the deep Prussian-blue unique to cyanotypes. Brings a moment of beauty and conversation to any space.
