They descend like celestial embers, alighting above the studio entrance—these images, hovering, waiting. They cast their glow with the patience of ancient stars. Stefanie Schneider, photographic alchemist, conjures landscapes not of this world but of the one we almost remember. To look once is to be ensnared, twice and the spell takes hold. There is no looking away.
Summer, 2014. Four figures stand in the cavernous hall of an old East Berlin factory, now Stefanie’s studio. Art is everywhere—light, color, longing. The air hums with something electric. Magic? Magnetism? It is unclear. The past lingers here, stacked in boxes, yet even through cardboard and paper, the images burn. They pulse from within, demanding release.
A memory surfaces—Christmas, sometime in the past. The flicker of a slide projector, the rhythmic click, the soft whir. My own face appearing, dissolving, reappearing. For decades, German households gathered around this mechanical oracle, spellbound. In Stefanie’s world, light does not merely reveal—it emanates. It exists independent of source, collapsing the boundary between what is seen and what is sensed. Whoever surrenders to her images is drawn in, held aloft in their glimmering tide.
Her pictures whisper stories—of lost fairies and wayward dreamers, of women adorned in neon wigs, bright yet alone. And where are the men? Scarce. Ghosts, perhaps. The woman with the tangerine hair, threaded with white flowers—should she not, first, unlatch the canary’s cage? Can one love a captive creature?
For part of the year, Stefanie lives in California, where these images are born. A land of boundless horizons and unclaimed desires, where dreams slip their leashes and run wild. To step into her world is to drift untethered, to surrender to the vast, unmarked terrain of possibility. One glides, hovers, wavers—an ecstatic vertigo, a surrender to movement itself.
Her stories emerge from a place beneath language, beneath time—where fairy tales, myths, and archetypes collide. They do not explain. They elude, beckon. The mind wrestles in vain; the heart understands. Each image erupts from this chthonic deep and ascends—light-bound, spectral, achingly sensual. Where there is beauty, there is also distortion. Where there is dream, there is also nightmare.
Stefanie moves easily between these poles. The drop from ether to abyss is no more than a sigh. She gathers light and shadow, heaven and inferno, longing and absence, and stirs them into one. She is the center, the unseen force turning the great wheel.
Her images undo us. They shrug off certainty, dissolve logic, unravel time. Their beauty is born from nothingness. Their gaze pierces the void and pulls something forth—fragile, eternal.
Stefanie summons a world, and like the oldest stories, it beguiles, bewitches, and leaves us longing.
