About the Item

A Memory (Strange Love) – 2010 20x24 cm, Edition 1/10 Digital C-Print, based on a Polaroid Signature label and certificate, artist Inventory No. 6131.01 Not mounted “I never remember the details of a Stefanie Schneider image, just the whole. She treads a third path between reality and dream that connects the two and truly sparks my artistic, visual freedom.” – Marc Forster This piece from Stefanie Schneider's Strange Love project, a substory within her 29 Palms series, captures the lingering essence of lost and unrequited love. Through the lens of personal experience, Schneider reflects on the ghost limb sensation of love's absence, the memory that remains even when the love itself is gone. Strange Love explores a complex ménage à trois between Lance (The Smoke Jumper), Eva (alias Fia), and Stefanie (alias Stella, alias Stevie), questioning the nature of desire, perception, and emotional intimacy. The story is reimagined, fluid, and intensely personal, yet echoes a universal truth about love’s often painful, transitory nature. “Fragments, perceptions, memories, images, words, emotions, visions overlap, comment and outrun each other, become history while still happening, leave at the same time transient and fixed documents: photographs, films, paintings, text.” – Maja Maria Liebau, theater critic Schneider’s work intertwines perspectives, blending illusion with reality, dreams with waking life. The visual tension between these layers suggests that truth itself is never singular. Each story in Strange Love exists as a fractured narrative, offering shifting truths based on subjective experience. This is further reflected in the interconnectedness of Strange Love and 29 Palms, as they offer distinct perspectives on the same emotional terrain, both serving as incomplete yet vital parts of the same conversation about human connection. The projects will ultimately merge into a singular reflection on love—a fictitious conclusion, forever open to interpretation. Through this exploration, Schneider questions whether the pursuit of truth in love is simply the pursuit of a personal narrative, ever-changing and constantly in flux. The emotive layers of this piece, and the Strange Love series as a whole, invite viewers to explore not only the visual but also the sensory, feeling the imprints of relationships that time cannot fully erase. Each image in this collection carries its own unique history, memory, and perspective, fragmented yet complete in its storytelling.
