The special and Avant-gardist Element written by Adi Hoesle
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Stefanie Schneider came to the attention of those deeply interested in international art. With photographs whose vivid expressivity had not been seen before, she was quickly viewed as being a coming star in art. But what is the special and avant-gardist element in her art?
What is striking is the incredible coloration of the photographs, a phenomenon which does not seem to conform to the high-tech and high-gloss perfection of contemporary photography. There are muted and pale colors, diffuse light, perhaps overexposed, blurred in the wide shot, sharp in detail. Close-ups alternate with landscapes; brightly colored portraits from pop culture alongside unknown persons in half relief stand next to self portraits of the artist, nudes alongside cowboys. Horses are swallowed up in the vast expanses of America, and as if this were not enough to create uncertainty in the viewer, a man places a pistol against the head of the artist herself. Everything seems to be in flux, not only the fixed motifs on the photographs, but also the sheer number of the exhibited photographs, hung as series; various sizes are only partially perceived as floods of images. The eyes begin to accommodate, attempt to focus, strive to achieve a fixed view, and thereby unleash nothing other than dizziness. Is the artist here attempting to seduce the viewer? Does she induce psychedelic borderline experiences? Or is this a dream world, a sort of self-portrait of the artist into which the viewer is enticed and kidnapped? The images begin to move, and the border between picture and film disappears.
It is the instant of specialness. Stefanie Schneider plays with the media of film and image; she performs a dance, rock 'n' roll in the desert! She causes the dream images to come alive and thereby conducts the supposed security of the real onto the quicksand of the Californian desert. The naked red-haired woman, the pink Cadillac or the vastness of the desert are used here as the American dream, the longing for happiness and unlimited possibilities of self-realization. Where would one be nearer to this than in permanently warm California, where nearer than in the dream factory of Hollywood? The film: the way of life as the world of Platonic ideas?
Whoever believes him- or herself thereby to have "seen through" the art of Stefanie Schneider will learn better upon attempting to explain the strange streakiness, blotches of color, and dark forms at the corner of a photograph. How are the scratches, dissolved colors and empty spots in the photograph to be explained in terms of visual design?
It is the subtlety of Stefanie Schneider which here radically disrupts the supposed dream world, the omnipotence of human existence. It is the utilized material itself which puts to question our transience, human existence itself. The Polaroid films which she uses have already become damaged; they have gone past their expiration date; they are in a state of physical decomposition, caught in their own passing away―just as we ourselves in our earthly existence have only a limited "shelf life." Our life is limited, Stefanie Schneider wishes to tell us, but it is nonetheless a beautiful dream!
In this inspired cooperation, motif and material extend a dynamic arc between being and non-being upon the stage of life.
Is it a dream, a film, or "only" reality?
This is the special and avant-gardist element in the artistic work of Stefanie Schneider.
In numerous exhibitions throughout the world, Stefanie Schneider has earned respect for her artistic work. Her films are a consistent and logical continuation of her manner of treating images, and they possess an even deeper emotional presence and quality.
Where could this work better be continued and further developed than in the vast expanses of the Californian desert, as the sensual dream which we all live?

Long exposure figurative Photography: 'Illuminations No. 53'
By Florence Montmare
Located in New York, NY
'Illuminations started in 2002 when a relationship was slowly falling apart. While trying to save it, we rented a large stylish apartment in Stockholm, and then later one in Arles, France, hoping that a change of scene would have a posi-tive effect. The new spaces made the distance between us more acute, and the inevitable break even more obvious. The ritual of making one photograph each night became crucial to me. I left the camera shutter open for 3 to 8 hours in a darkened bedroom, and as the morning light arrived I interrupted the exposure. It is a private journal, documenting time and memory, where present meets past.'
Born in Vienna to Swedish and Greek parents and raised in Stockholm, Florence Montmare has an MBA in Design Management from Linnaeus University, Sweden and studied at the School of Visual Arts. A graduate of International Center of Photography, New York, she collaborated with artist Sam Samore...

Seasons 1981 Photo Color Copier Print Photograph Museum Collected Art Xerography
By Leslie Schiff
Located in Surfside, FL
SEASONS (1981)
This is for the single print listed here. (not the outside folder or title sheet)
Title: Flowers in Hand. This one is hand signed and dated verso.
Seasons explores the seasons of Man, Woman, Child, Civilization, Nature and Technology. First digital artwork purchased by the Metropolitan Museum.
Date: 1980-1981
Medium: vintage color photocopy print.
“I worked at The Metropolitan Museum in 1981, when they acquired [Lesley’s] SEASONS portfolio.
We knew we wanted it, even though we didn’t have a category for it.” David Kiehl, Curator of Prints and Special Collections The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City.
Lesley Schiff (born 1951) is an American fine artist. Schiff studied painting at the Art Institute Chicago before developing her signature practice using color laser printers to create images. Her work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Mead Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other major museums, corporate and private collections globally. Lesley Schiff revolutionized the photocopier from being an office tool to just another instrument in the artist's arsenal. Rather than addressing the tool in her work, Schiff instead uses the photocopier like a paintbrush to realize her vision. Once a painter, Schiff says: “I never intended to stop painting. I just decided to start painting with a modern tool. Working with the color laser printer keeps you in your culture. It's like America. Plugged in. Electronic. Direct." Painting with light, Schiff's body of work outlines a cycle of life: man, woman, child, civilization, nature, technology. More recent works challenge the viewer to understand the concept of eye-levels and perspectives, reinventing the way we see. Schiff's work was the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first digital acquisition, and most recently, was featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art in "Experiments in Electrostatics".
She uses a color laser printer “like a paintbrush” to create her art. She has said about her work and her tool: “I never intended to stop painting. I just decided to start painting with a modern tool. Working with the color laser printer keeps you in your culture. It's like America. Plugged in. Electronic. Direct—but no matter how hi-tech my tools become, I’m a painter, but instead of painting with oils, I paint with light.
The Whitney Museum will show Lesley Schiff's pioneering SEASONS portfolio in its entirety. Many prominent collections acquired SEASONS as their first digital artwork.
She participated in the Punk Art show in the 1970's. Her work kind of relates to Fluxus and Dada.
Leslie Schiff moved from Chicago to New York in the early 1970s. Much of her art involves collage and the Xerox photocopy machine. Her images are rooted in her personal psyche and have an intuitive meaning that is not always easily understood. In exhibitions, Xerox sheets are combined and displayed decoratively on the wall. Schiff has also created books; and made video and sound tapes. She was included in the seminal New York/New Wave 1981 exhibition show at MoMA PS1 along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, William S.Burroughs, David Byrne, Larry Clark, Crash (John Matos), Ronnie Cutrone, Brian Eno, Nan Goldin, Keith Haring, Ray Johnson, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Scharf, Steven Sprouse, Andy Warhol and Lawrence Weiner.
She did a “visual biography,” comprised of portraits of Bob Dylan—depicted at different ages, from his 20s to his 60s—illustrations of his lyrics, and images of iconic objects like his sunglasses and harmonica. Schiff collaborated with Matthew Carter...
