"TB Ward, Statue of Liberty, Island #3, 1998," an original Cibachrome Print by photographer Stephen Wilkes, is a piece for the true collector. Impressively vivid emotion and detail projects from the work, highlighting Wilkes' exceptional talent at capturing the essence of his subjects. In this particular example, you will notice the subtle, but unmistakable reflection of the Statue of Liberty in the mirror above the sink – the view unchanged as you travel back in time. This fine work of art is perfect for those who have an affinity for color photography, New York, Ellis Island, American history, and architecture. This work is #2 from a small, authorized edition of 50, although only 16 were produced. From 1998-2003, Wilkes had free reign of the hospital complex that comprises the south side of Ellis Island. Neglected for nearly fifty years, the buildings were in an extreme state of disrepair: lead paint peeled from the ceilings and walls of rooms, vines and trees grew through the floorboards of once-cramped wards, detritus and debris littered the hallways. In spaces long abandoned, Wilkes manages to capture undeniable evidence of life. His is an alternate and breathtaking vision of this gateway to freedom. And through his artwork, Wilkes inspired and eventually helped raise six million dollars in funding towards the restoration of the south side of the island. In Wilkes’ own words, “I became infected by the beauty, the sense of humanity in the rooms, the light…In a really strange way, I felt like I was chosen to document it.” In a review of one of Wilkes’ Ellis Island exhibitions, critic Margaret Loke of The New York Times wrote, “Each of the rooms that he photographs with care seems to have its own luxurious color scheme. Mr. Wilkes sees pleasing palettes of impressionism in walls and ceilings of peeling paint.” Leah Ollman of The Los Angeles Times wrote, “Stephen Wilkes’ photographs of an abandoned section of Ellis Island are significant documents of a historical site. Strange as it may sound, they also succeed as spirit photographs, records of absent souls. He received his BS in photography from Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications with a minor in business management from the Whitman School of Management in 1980. Since opening his studio in New York City in 1983, Wilkes has built an unprecedented body of work and a reputation as one of America’s most iconic photographers, widely recognized for his fine art, editorial and commercial work. His photographs are included in the collections of numerous museums, including James A. Michener Art Museum, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Library of Congress, 9/11 Memorial Museum, and many others. His editorial work has appeared in, and on the covers of, leading publications such as the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Time, Fortune, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, etc. In 1998, a one-day assignment to the south side of Ellis Island led to a 5-year photographic study of the island’s long abandoned medical wards where immigrants were detained before they could enter America. Through his photographs and video, Wilkes helped secure $6 million toward the restoration of the south side of the island. A monograph based on the work, Ellis Island: Ghosts of Freedom, was published in 2006 and was named one of TIME magazine’s 5 Best Photography Books of the Year. The work was also featured on NPR and CBS Sunday Morning. Despite his intense dedication to personal projects, Wilkes continues to shoot advertising campaigns for the world’s leading agencies and corporations, including: Netflix, OppenheimerFunds, SAP, IBM, Capital One, The New Yorker, Johnson & Johnson, DHL, American Express, Nike, Sony, Verizon, IBM, AT&T, Rolex, Honda. Wilkes’ extensive awards and honors include the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography, Photographer of the Year from Adweek Magazine, Fine Art Photographer of the Year 2004 Lucie Award, TIME Magazine Top 10 Photographs of 2012, Sony World Photography Professional Award 2012, Adobe Breakthrough Photography Award 2012 and Prix Pictet, Consumption 2014.
