Vincent Dixon
Borneo 2: photograph of urban city architecture landscape, Southeast Asia

2011

About the Item

This photograph is from among Vincent Dixon's series created in Borneo, Myanmar, Paris, Pushkar, Los Angeles, New York, London, Miami, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, São Paulo, and many other sites across the globe. With his sensitive portraits that turn strangers into intimates, offbeat compositions that raise more questions than they answer, and insightful observations about the connectedness of humanity, Dixon blurs the lines between commercial and fine art photography with a creativity and wit uniquely his own. This photograph was exhibited at The Curtis, Philadelphia, 2018. It is signed, dated, and numbered in the lower margin on the front. Edition of 15. Image size 11" x 14", paper size 19" x13". Dixon has maintained a professional fine art and commercial photography practice for over thirty years. He began his career in Paris, where he was awarded some of the most highly visible advertising campaigns in Europe, including Absolut Europe and Perrier. His work has earned Gold, Silver, and Bronze at the Cannes Lions Festival; Gold, Silver, and Bronze at the Clio Awards; multiple Epica Awards; a Lucie Award; the Grand Prix Stratégies de la Publicité in France; and a Pencil from D&AD Professional Awards. He has also been honored at the International Creativity Festival, the French Art Director's Club, and the London International Awards. Dixon has been featured in Photo District News and Creativity Magazine, and his work is regularly seen in Luerzer's Archive and Communication Arts. He is represented in New York, London, Paris, and Barcelona, and continues to travel the globe working on campaigns that have included Adidas, Hermès, Toyota, Visa, PlayStation, McDonalds, Pepsi, Motorola, and many others. Self portrait by Vincent Dixon; b&w portrait photo by Matt Zugale.

It’s an ark of history, floating lazily on the waters of the Aegean Sea, just a few miles away from cosmopolitan Mykonos. It’s a chance to walk around the revival of the glory of the Greek civilization. It’s the head priest of the Cyclades, the birthplace of the immortals. In the ancient times, the myth of god Apollo, god of light, and goddess Artemis having been born there rendered the island sacred: no mortal would ever be allowed to be born on its land. But, a cradle of gods as the island has been, no mortals would ever be allowed to die on it either. So, apart from it being a conspicuous religious and economic centre, the island had also been exclusive in that: even during the years of peak of the Delian Alliance, women on the brink of childbirth and people close to dying would be carried to the neighbouring island of Rineia. The whole of the known world of that age was aware of the sacredness of the island and of its uniqueness. • "Dry Season" Zebra Herd at Watering Hole Wildlife Photograph Edition 330/950
    By Thomas Mangelsen
    Located in Houston, TX
Color wildlife photograph from 1991 by photojournalist Thomas Mangelsen. The work features a herd of zebras gathered around a watering hole. Signed, dated, and editioned 33/950 along lower from margin. Currently hung a complementary black frame with a cream matting. Dimensions Without Frame: H 24.5 in. x W 35 in. Artist Biography: A Nebraska native, Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior. In 1965, Mangelsen began studying business at the University of Nebraska. In 1967, Tom transferred to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he changed his major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Tom continued postgraduate study in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. In 1970 Mangelsen moved to Nederland, Colorado. He spent two years living in the Rocky Mountains in an old mining shack without electricity or running water with his English setter, black lab and raccoon. Tom continued to work on his photography and studied arctic alpine ecology at the University of Colorado’s Mountain Research Station near Nederland. There he met Bert Kempers, a CU film producer, who later hired Tom as cinematographer and film editor for his company Westwind Productions, making educational and nature documentaries. Tom longed to make a documentary about the Platte River and its great wildlife resource. He returned to the Platte each spring to film the great crane migration. These experiences led to Tom traveling to the cranes’ nesting grounds in Alaska and their wintering areas in Texas. National Geographic television wanted to produce a documentary, which would chronicle the plight of the endangered whooping crane...
