Concha Prada (Spanish, b. 1963) is a contemporary artist whose work explores the boundaries between photography and painting. Through the strict use of the photographic medium, she develops a profound reflection on pictorial space and abstraction.
In Rastro I (2008), a digital color photograph produced in an edition of three, Prada pushes this relationship to its limit. The work belongs to a series of photograms — photographs made without a camera — where light directly imprints the trace of an object or action on photographic paper. Created in complete darkness, these images are the result of gesture and chance, revealing compositions that blur the line between the visible and the imagined.
Using a simple domestic object — a mop — as the central element of the process, Prada transforms an everyday utensil into a painterly instrument. The resulting image resonates with abstraction and movement, merging the conceptual rigor of photography with the material sensibility of painting.
Concha Prada’s artistic practice frequently revolves around domestic environments, where the construction of pictorial devices within photographic space challenges traditional definitions of both media.
