About the Item
David Studwell, Prince IV
Screen print
46.5 x 56 cm (18.3 x 22.04 in)
Edition of 25
In Prince IV, David Studwell pays dazzling tribute to the Purple One with a monochrome portrait alive with glittering diamond dust. The silkscreen layers capture Prince’s magnetic stage presence while the shimmering surface evokes both the spectacle of pop stardom and the vulnerability beneath the spotlight—an enduring theme in Studwell’s Pop-Art practice.
A standout piece for collectors of modern Pop and celebrity portraiture, Studwell’s work bridges the golden age of cinema with today’s luxury art market.
David Studwell is a contemporary British printmaker celebrated for bold, nostalgia-infused screenprints that fuse classic Hollywood glamour with modern Pop Art energy. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Studwell draws on the visual language of mid-20th-century celebrity culture—Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Steve McQueen and other icons—recasting familiar images in striking colour palettes and metallic finishes such as platinum leaf and diamond dust.
His practice pays homage to pioneers like Andy Warhol while probing the double-edged nature of fame: the allure and the vulnerability behind the public image. Working primarily in silkscreen on heavyweight Somerset paper, he often collaborates with leading photographers—most notably creating Elton John: Home Run – Dodger Stadium 1975 with the late Terry O’Neill.
Studwell’s editions have been exhibited internationally at galleries and art fairs including the Affordable Art Fair London, and are held in prominent private collections worldwide. Collectors of his work include high-profile musicians and fashion figures, underscoring his reputation as a leading voice in contemporary British Pop-inspired art.

David Studwell
David Studwell is a contemporary British printmaker celebrated for his vibrant, Pop-Art–inspired screenprints that explore the glamour and fragility of fame. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, London, Studwell has spent more than two decades refining a visual language that fuses the bold iconography of 1960s–70s popular culture with a distinctly modern edge. Drawing on the golden era of Hollywood and the music industry, his work re-imagines legendary figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Steve McQueen, and Elizabeth Taylor. Studwell’s precision screen-printing and frequent use of diamond dust create striking images that shimmer with both allure and an underlying sense of vulnerability. His art examines the tension between celebrity’s polished façade and the darker realities behind it—often referencing paparazzi snapshots, mugshots and other intimate, off-guard moments. Studwell’s limited-edition prints have attracted an international following and are held in the collections of Kate Moss, Nile Rodgers and Sheryl Crow, among others. Highlights include his celebrated collaboration with photographer Terry O’Neill on Elton John: Home Run – Dodger Stadium 1975, a six-colour diamond-dust screenprint paying tribute to one of rock’s most iconic performances. Featured in GQ, Elle and The World of Interiors, and exhibited at leading events such as the Affordable Art Fair (London), Studwell continues to capture the glitter and grit of modern celebrity culture in works that are at once nostalgic and sharply contemporary.

Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer, and actor. The recipient of numerous awards and nominations, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation.[7] He was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona;[8][9] his wide vocal range, which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams; and his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings.[10] His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip hop. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound.

The genesis of “Prince” came from a collector who had seen “The Day the Music Died”. As an avid Prince fan, he wanted this homage to him for his home. He had been especially dazzled during a concert when Prince performed at the piano and wanted to capture that moment. Purple Rain is his favorite album and loved how I handled it in “The Day the Music Died” so he wanted it reproduced in the same place – on the left – in his original. A book about Prince’s band rounded out the collector’s vision, and he chose the specific image for the Prince and the Revolution...
