From 1961 to 1967, though, Hopper made photographs as if his life depended on it. In the vividly impressionistic introduction to Out of the Sixties – his first book of photographs, published in 1986 – Hopper wrote: "I never made a cent from these photos. They cost me money but kept me alive … They were the only creative outlet I had for these years until Easy Rider. I never carried a camera again." (source: Guardian UK) Though he is best known as the auteur of Easy Rider (1969) and as a prolific actor, with roles in some of the most iconic films of the 20th century, including Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Apocalypse Now (1979), and Blue Velvet (1986), Dennis Hopper was also an active visual artist. Influenced by a range of actors and artists, including James Dean, Marcel Duchamp, and Andy Warhol, he produced paintings, assemblages, and hundreds of photographs in concentrated periods throughout his career. In the early 1960s, he was among the key figures in L.A.’s avant-garde art scene. Photography was central to his practice; from 1961-67, Hopper shot in California, New York, Alabama, and Mexico, amassing a body of black-and-white photographs ranging from street scenes to portraits of icons of the age, establishing a vision that would shape his acclaimed directorial work.

- Tomi Ungerer Evergreen Review poster, 1967 (protest posters)By Tomi UngererLocated in NEW YORK, NYVintage original Tomi Ungerer, Vietnam protest poster, Evergreen Review, 1967: Grove Press publisher Barney Rosset began Evergreen review in 1957 as a literary quarterly featuring the likes of Sartre, Camus and Beckett as well as American poets Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Jack Kerouac. By 1966, the publication had increased its frequency and become a voice of political iconoclasm, so graphic designer John Alcorn refreshed its look, dropping "review" from the title in the process. Heralding the redesign was a new advertising Campaign : "Join The Underground." Here, a poster for the February 1967, number utilizes cover artwork by noted illustrator and satirist Tomi Ungerer: a coolie-hatted image of Uncle Sam, sunk in the quagmire of Vietnam and displeased with the face he presents to the mirror. Off-set lithograph. Measure: 30 x 45 inches. Some signs of minor handling; otherwise very good condition for its age. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Original 1st printing. About the artist Tomi Ungerer is best known for his witty children's books, as well as being a successful political commentator, prolific writer, and erotic artist. Born in Strasbourg in 1931, he first gained notoriety after moving to New York in 1956 and creating illustrations for magazines such as Esquire, Life, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. Ungerer is now internationally renowned for his etched caricatures imbued with sharp social satire. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s Ungerer began to branch out from advertising and editorial work to make personal pictorial responses to racism, fascism, and war, most notably a set of brutal anti-Vietnam war posters...Category

- John Baldessari Necessary Facts poster 1999 (vintage John Baldessari)By John BaldessariLocated in NEW YORK, NYJohn Baldessari at Marian Goodman Gallery New York, 1999: Rare vintage original 1990s exhibition poster to commensurate the opening of 'John Baldessari, The Tetrad Series', 1999 at Marian Goodman Gallery.' This piece features a grid of four images and, in traditional Baldessari style, presents photography, text and a nod to painting. Vintage poster. Dimensions: 18 x 18 inches (9 x 9 inches folded closed). Good overall condition; fold-lines as originally issued; minor signs of handling & light wear to folds. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare. John Baldessari: It is hard to characterize John Baldessari's varied practice—which includes photomontage, artist’s books, prints, paintings, film, performance, and installation—except through his approach of good-humored irreverence. Baldessari is commonly associated with Conceptual or Minimalist art, though he has called this characterization “a little bit boring.” His two-dimensional works often incorporate found images, composed in layers or presented as distinct pieces with an element of surprise, like a brightly colored geometric shape in the place of a face or a starkly printed sardonic caption. Baldessari has demonstrated a lasting interest in language and semantics, articulating these concerns through the use of puns or the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated images and words, as in his 1978 work Blasted Allegories. His self-referencing photomontages and use of text have been sources of inspiration for countless artists, including Cindy Sherman, David Salle, and Barbara Kruger. Baldessari identifies his own artistic lineage, saying, "I would prefer to go to the source with Duchamp rather than credit Warhol as an influence." Related Categories: John Baldessari prints.
