Cold Song - underwater photograph - print on paper 18" x 24"

2013

About the Item

I was in no creative mood that day. My ex-girlfriend told me she was pregnant. As if that was not enough, the pool was not heated, and the water was freezing. I could have called the shoot off but not this time. The model was my Facebook buddy for years and it was our first face to face. If it were not for me, Aaron would have called it off too. A motorcycle accident nearly took his life that weekend. He was swimming in freezing water with the bouquet he brought hiding his bandages from the camera. This pain on his face - it was real. Two years later, this photo won an international competition and was displayed in Paris at the Louvre Museum. Original gallery quality digital archival pigment print on metallic paper - signed by the artist. Paper size: 18" x 24" Image size: 16" x 24" Limited edition of 24 The artwork is furnished with certificate of authenticity, signed by artist with artist's name, edition number, edition limit, and other details. The artwork needs no framing; it is being hung by a hidden frame on the back. Alex Sher is an award-winning American underwater fine art photographer whose admiration of feminine sensuality heralded him to worldwide acclaim. Sher was born in Ukraine in 1962 and started taking photographs at the age of twelve. He graduated from Kyiv University in 1984. Two years later, he volunteered as medical personnel to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster recovery. When asked about that time, he says "having no clue how much radiation you are getting makes you appreciate every breath - pretty much what you feel underwater." Alex Sher started showing his photographs in the early nineties; however, he considered himself an amateur artist until his work was stolen from an exhibition in Kyiv. Sher immigrated to the US with his family in 1995 and currently resides in Los Angeles. As a former biologist and an ocean diver, Alex is deeply concerned with the decimation of kelp forests along the California Pacific Coast. Sher’s underwater photographs emerged in 2011. In 2015, after participating in a photo competition, his works were exhibited in Paris at the Louvre Museum and later by museums of London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major cities. Sher's first solo exhibition was held in 2016 in Los Angeles by the Bruce Lurie Gallery. Since then, he has had six exclusive exhibitions, has been in numerous group exhibitions, and has participated in major US art fairs. Sher's artistic style is marked by the transition from photographing marine wildlife at the very beginning, to then figurative nudity, with a majority of monochrome black and white works. His most recent pieces showcase minimalism and abstraction with bright colors through a quiet, eye-catchy, and charming combination of figurative and abstract art. Sher is an excellent underwater coach who trains his models on how to control their breath and buoyancy, as well as their feelings. He also teaches spiritual blending with the water and modeling technics for different underwater cameras. Alex Sher generously shares his artistic and technical innovations. His ideas inspire underwater photographers around the world. Sher's first photo book 'Mermaids' was published in 2018. Alex Sher is being represented by the Touchon Gallery since 2019.

Double Helix, Contemporary Color Photography, Oversized Art Framed
By Roberta Fineberg
Located in New york, NY
For Double Helix, 2021 Roberta Fineberg is inspired by abstract painting. The artist explores the concept of infinite possibilities. Appealing to RF’s desire to alternate between the concrete and the abstract, the artist selects a theme of the eternal feminine, a female swimmer, repeated to affect a modern mandala: A swimmer moves, floats in aqua-marine waters through a kaleidoscopic view. A single image flipped and rotated in 16 quadrants forms a collage on movement, space, time, rhythm, and color. The contemporary color photograph is 40” x 60” an archival pigment print mounted on dibond with plexi face mount. The art is signed, dated, titled on verso (back of work) by the artist. Edition of 5. 2- a/p's. Provenance: Private Collector *** Artist's Bio: As a visual artist, Roberta Fineberg (RF) focuses on the themes of serendipity, inventiveness, and the development of ideas for her photography, video, installations, works on paper, and painting. Drawn to experimentation, she explores diverse mediums and concepts such as the ephemeral (Butterfly Series), stolen moments (documentary photography), play, timelessness, the enduring, and the significance of matter. RF, living in New York City, began her career as an editorial photographer while studying in Paris. In France she contributed both photography and writing to publications, landing a column (photos and text) with The Saturday Review while exhibiting photographs in public spaces. Roberta Fineberg’s freelance photography appeared in Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, Paris Match, L’Officiel Femme, Ms, Weltwoche, Vanguardia, among others with images licensed through stock agencies. Photographs were selected for cover art at W.W. Norton, St. Martin’s Press, Harcourt, Bookspan, Simon & Schuster, etc. Print Regional Design Annual New York (2003) awarded her for book jacket photography for If Wishes Were Horses. In 1997 Macmillan published City Riders: A Story of Riding and Friendship her first book of black-and-white photographs and a story about three teenage girls in the 1990s who rode horses at the now-defunct Claremont Riding Academy and oldest stable in New York City. In 2023, RF created an interactive installation, works on paper on the female body, in a public space. In July 2022, Fineberg’s Double Helix was included in a Sotheby’s auction in New York City and exhibited in the preview show Contemporary Discoveries. Selected exhibitions include Time Gallery New York (2022), Phyllis Harriman Gallery New York studio shows (2020, 2022), CADAF online art fair (2020), Gallery122 New York pop-up group...
