About the Item

This photograph by Fidel Santos depicts a Renaissance-style statue of Primavera, the Roman goddess of spring, fertility, and renewal. Her serene expression and floral adornment evoke timeless beauty, while the visible age and decay of the wood speak to themes of mortality and transience. Though rendered in a moment of stillness and grace, the sculpture itself shows cracks, patina, and natural degradation, details Santos preserves intentionally in the image, transforming it into a contemporary memento mori. By depicting the weathered sculpture and presenting it as a two-dimensional image rather than a traditional object, Santos shifts the viewer's relationship with the figure. What might have been a static, three-dimensional relic becomes a meditation on memory and loss, filtered through the permanence of photography and the impermanence of the subject. This piece is part of Fidel Santos’ broader practice, which often explores the symbolism of decay, the fragility of beauty, and the preservation of time-worn subjects through contemporary mediums. Whether exploring relics of classical antiquity or remnants of forgotten architecture, Santos invites viewers to find meaning in what endures and what fades.

Flores Para Jaurez
By Oscar Magallanes
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed and numbered. Flores Para Juarez pays homage to the women in Juarez, Mexico. The female figure in the image is a friend of Magallanes who had witnessed a lot of abuse growing up in Juarez, and emerged from her experience a very strong woman. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Oscar Magallanes was born in 1976 in Duarte, CA. He recalls, “The first art I saw were murals of Zapata and Mexica glyphs from the Chicano movement. These were juxtaposed next to homeboy role calls and Old English writing. I didn’t see a gallery or museum until I was 15.” After a troubled youth and his expulsion from high school at the age of fifteen, Oscar was accepted into the Ryman Arts program which he credits with encouraging him to pursue a career in art. From 1998 to 2003 Oscar’s studio was located in the thriving Pomona Artist Colony. Oscar also worked closely with the late Gilbert “Magu” Lujan...
