About the Item
The color-hunting eye of veteran street photographer Mitchell Funk transforms drab street scenes into sanctuaries of luminous bright colors. Manhattan's grey canyons receive only fleeting moments of light and are mostly devoid of color. That's where the color-hunter Mitchell Funk comes in. After more than 53 years of shooting in New York, his senses are keenly attuned to finding the right oasis at the right instant. Snap! He documents a small zone of color on a drab street, and in an instant, the light is gone. In "Dog Walker," the viewers' eyes are met equally by colorful figures and colorful backgrounds. It's all supercharged by Funk's intense raking light.
The photograph is signed, dated, numbered, 3/15 lower right; another size is available. Unframed, printed later Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper.
The interplay of patterns and textures makes this more than a location portrait of a dog. The work is a masterfully constructed statement of precise design, color and composition.

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
