Molly McCall
Born in Monterey, California, Molly McCall was raised along the rugged California coastline of the Monterey Peninsula. Surrounded by infamous photographers, writers, filmmakers, and painters, their work provided an indelible appreciation and awareness for nature and inspired her to pursue a creative career in art and design. Molly’s earliest influence in art-making came from her great-grandfather, an illustrator for the New York Times, and grandfather, a professional watercolorist in Southern California. She started painting and photography at an early age, and later attended Laguna Beach School of Art to study both mediums. With a family background in clothing, Molly began her creative career designing textiles and garments with her own label, which were featured in more than 100 specialty boutiques across the US, including Henri Bendel in New York, Fred Segal in Los Angeles, and more than 50 Nordstrom locations, where she was presented with Nordstrom’s Most Favored Designer Award in California. After nearly two decades in the clothing industry, Molly returned to painting and darkroom photography.

Follow The Tracks

'Follow The Tracks', 2018,
20 x 40 cm, edition of 10,
digital C-Print based on a Polaroid diptych,
hand-numbered and signed on the back by artist

“Follow The Tracks”
This Polaroid Diptych, shot on expired Impossible film, is part of the “Landmarks Series”, in which Julia thrives to depict the beauty of her home, the Ruhr Area, that is often rather known for its industrial history than its landscape art sculptures.
Julia’s work is showing and in the permanent collection of the Bombay Beach Biennale.
Artist Statement
“Since my childhood days I always loved taking photos, but for unknown reasons instant film never really caught my attention. After I saw the works of a friend who happened to be a gifted Polaroid photographer, I was totally mesmerized and the desire to shoot with instant film constantly grew in me. But for as long as I can think music has always been my main preoccupation.
I somehow always feel the need to create, but my focus shifted more and more from making music to instant photography and it grew into something much more fulfilling and pure. Sometimes, these two passions even come together when I am able to provide my photos for album artworks – this makes me incredibly happy.
As I always have been very introverted and reclusive I often drift off into my own inner world. The dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres in my work are the visualization and the result of these imaginations.
Another influence on my photography is my essential need to travel the world. But I am not interested in documenting the places I see like they are but rather love to create otherworldly scenes by adding the dreamlike texture of instant film, serving me as a needful escape from reality.”
Artist Biography

Her work has been published in various international print and online publications.
Since 2017, she is a member of the renowned "12:12 Project", a worldwide collective of female Polaroid photographers.

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
cyan = blue
type = print
Cyanotype is a historic photographic processes, invented in 1842 and used by Anna Atkins–the first female photographer. The process involves coating watercolor paper with light-sensitive chemistry made of iron salts. Photographic negatives are laid on top, exposed in the sunlight, and then washed in water to develop into the deep Prussian-blue unique to cyanotypes. Brings a moment of beauty and conversation to any space.
