Power Pilgrimage - Birth Scene from the Farm and Ina May Gaskin (Orange+Red)

2020

About the Item

In 1971, three hundred hippies set off from California in a convoy of 90 trucks and schoolbuses to find a new life. The pregnant women amongst them, out a desire to treat birth as a normal part of proceedings, passed around birth manuals and learnt to deliver each others' babies on the road. It was the memory of the very first woman, calmly and tenderly birthing in the arms of her husband in the back of a bus on a pitstop, that was to change the lives of two watching women in particular: Ina May Gaskin and Pamela Hunt. Called in spontaneously to assist, and watching in wonder at the first natural birth they'd ever seen, that Ina May would describe decades later as an 'astonishing, wild beauty' that 'gave her something that has never left'. Ten more babies were born along the way, till the Caravan arrived settled on 1700 acres of land in Summertown, Tennessee, where Ina May and her husband Stephen Gaskin founded The Farm, at the heart which was a fearless belief in the physiological normalcy of childbirth. Ina May began to recruit an army of likeminded midwives and spearhead a new subculture, publishing their stories in 1975 in Spiritual Midwifery. Now in its fourth edition, consumers to this day use the book to seek alternatives out of the hospital model. In a tribute both to the legacy bequeathed by the first birthing woman on the Caravan, and to Ina May's advocacy of the imagery of crowning to demystify birth, this unprecedented visual re-telling of the 'wild beauty' on the school bus in 1971 suggests to an audience in 2020 how we might again seek out a culture of our own.

  • "Anisha, Radio Host & Chad, Actor, " - Color Portrait from Fairfax District

Fairfax Royalty Exhibtions: "Show Me Your Neon," Gallery 1202, Gilroy, CA. November 18-December 2019 "Fairfax Royalty," The Argyle, Los Angeles, CA. October 2017 Fairfax Royalty, Daniel Raphael Gallery, London, November 2017 Fairfax Royalty Exerpt: The Fairfax District is the center for all things trending in Los Angeles, and it happens to be where I live. The neighborhood, especially along Fairfax Avenue, has been transformed from its humbler Jewish roots of delis and bagel bakeries to become the epicenter of the LA hip-hop/ skate-culture scene: an ever-evolving, hyped-up mix of inventive fashion, edgy music and truly beautiful people...The Fairfax Royalty are the subjects of this study, in which I explore the concepts of portraiture in an age dominated by social media and its fleeting images. I contrived a scenario where I asked: Image if only one portrait was all that could be left behind as historical evidence of your life. What ideas about yourself would you project through the portrait? How would the image incorporate your personality and desires? Would the portrait be posed or spontaneous?...This idea was taken to epic proportions by my subjects.” Fairfax Royalty is a series photographed by Los Angles based photographer Rachel Berkowitz, documenting her neighborhood, the Fairfax District. The following excerpt is from her printed book "Fairfax Royalty:" "The neighborhood, especially along Fairfax Avenue, has been transformed from its humbler Jewish roots of delis and bagel bakeries to become the epicenter of the LA hip-hop/ skate-culture scene: an ever-evolving, hyped-up mix of inventive fashion, edgy music and truly beautiful people...The Fairfax Royalty are the subjects of this study, in which I explore the concepts of portraiture in an age dominated by social media and its fleeting images. What ideas about yourself would you project through the portrait? How would the image incorporate your personality and desires? Would the portrait be posed or spontaneous?...This idea was taken to epic proportions by my subjects.” Berkowitz embedded herself in to the trend-setting society of Fairfax, and approached it as an actor would approach getting into "character," through method-acting. As Berkowtitz states, she used, "an anthropological perspective...[and] delved directly into the game of trendsetting, absorbing behaviors, fashion and musical tastes set by the street's royalty." This experience was in direct opposition to her London upbringing, and forced her to see the dichotomy of these two lifestyles as they molded her career as an artist. Berkowitz not only created a series of photographs during this documentary project, but also produced a book and a performance piece during the process.
