Robert Farber (b. 1944) is a renowned photographer whose five-decade career spans both commercial and fine art photography. His diverse portfolio includes subjects ranging from fashion and portraiture to still life and landscapes, captured from around the world. This exhibition features two of his fashion-related series: “Vintage Fashion,” primarily drawn from his commercial work, and “Deterioration,” a series of fashion photographs transformed by the natural aging of their film transparencies. Over time, exposure to heat, humidity, and other environmental factors caused the film to react chemically, resulting in vivid, surreal distortions that give the images an unexpected, almost otherworldly quality.
Farber, a self-taught artist, began his photography career in New York City in the 1970s. Since then, his work has appeared in major publications such as Vogue, GQ, Elle, and Vanity Fair. He photographed numerous editorial advertisements and commercials for major brands and companies such as Christian Dior, Bill Blass, Revlon, Bloomingdale’s, Marshall Fields, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Farber captured some of the most iconic models of his time, including Gia Carangi (often considered the first supermodel), Janice Dickinson, Apollonia van Ravenstein, Iman, Beverly Johnson, Carol Alt, Christie Brinkley, and Linda Evangelista. Many of these models appear in the works included in the exhibition, but in some cases, the aging of the original film has obscured or altered their features, transforming the images into abstract expressions of fashion and beauty.
Timeless brings together these two fashion-related series for the first time in a museum exhibition, showcasing the breadth of Farber’s work in this genre. The show highlights his creative vision, his collaboration with models and brands, and his ability to reflect on the passage of time—whether by referencing past styles or allowing time itself to shape the final image. The exhibition offers a unique perspective on the intersection of Farber’s artistic and commercial work, exploring the lasting impact of his contributions to the world of fashion photography.

Robert Farber
Over the course of his career, photographer Robert Farber has influenced countless photo artists. Owing to what were initially mistakes he made that yielded a soft-focus look and grainy textures in his images, Farber developed a painterly style of photography that draws on Impressionist and Surrealist art and sees him positioning subjects in warm, naturally lit interiors and amid unlikely landscapes.
Farber was born in Newark, New Jersey. From an early age, he explored his interest in art, encouraged by his mother who allowed him to turn their basement into an art studio. There he practiced drawing, as well as painting with watercolors and oil paints.
Farber studied marketing and business at the University of Miami, but always wanted to work in the arts. In 1970, he moved to New York City and began his journey into photography.
Farber brought his work to outdoor art festivals all over the city. At one of these festivals, an advertising executive saw one of his works and asked him to photograph for a Cotton Inc. advertisement. This led to more jobs, working for other big-name clients — such as Macy's, 20th Century Fox and Revlon, and major publications like Esquire and Playboy.
Farber has garnered lots of recognition throughout his career, including “Photographer of the Year” from the Photographic Manufacturers Association and an ASP International Award from the American Society of Photographers.
Farber annually contributes exclusive prints of his "Women as Art" series to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. His “Deterioration Series” continues to be exhibited around the world, including at galleries in Paris, Brussels and Florence.

Robert Farber’s style has influenced generations of photographers. His painterly, impressionistic style captures the essence of composition in every genre, including nudes, still life, landscapes and architecture. His ten photo art books have sold over half a million copies.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis brought Farber into Doubleday for the publication of his book “By The Sea,” which won the Art Director’s Award for color photography. Aside from numerous creative awards, Robert Farber also received the Photographer of the Year from PMA (Photographic Manufacturers Association), ASP International Award from the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and The American Society of Photographers. This award was given to those who’ve made a significant contribution to the science and art of photography. Some previous recipients of this award include Dr. Edwin Land (inventor of the Polaroid), George Hurrell, and National Geographic.
Farber’s work with nudes in fine art as well as in the commercial realm is known and respected. He has lectured for Ogilvy & Mather on the “Nude in Advertising.” ASMP requested to use Farber’s nudes as an examples of the artistic application in support of the National Endowment of Arts, after its backing of the controversial Mapplethorpe/Serrano exhibit. Tom Kelley’s interesting career spans more than four decades: first started as an apprentice in a New York photo studio that catered to the city's upper 400 (i.e. photographing the Vanderbilts, the Astors, the Harrimans, the Morgans, etc.). One of his biggest spot news assignments was covering the Lindbergh kidnapping case.
Coming to California, Kelley was retained to photograph the stars created by David 0. Selznick and Samuel Goldwyn including Ingrid Bergman. A few of his other most famous subjects have been Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, James Cagney, Clark Gable, Winston Churchill, Bob Hope, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Jack Benny, John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, Marilyn Monroe, with and without clothes. His easiest photo subject? Clark Gable. His toughest? Joan Bennett.
