The Chicks and Chicks series is a vital piece of my Desert Living Project, a meditation on organic living, self-sufficiency, and the deep, often overlooked connection between humans and the sources of life itself. In an era where industrialization has distanced us from the essentials—food, nature, and the creatures that sustain us—this project brings us full circle, back to the homestead, back to the land. Here, beauty is found in the rhythms of farm life, in the individuality of animals once deemed mere commodities, in the quiet rebellion of living in harmony with nature rather than exploiting it.
Set against the vast, mythical backdrop of the American West, my work exists on the threshold of a super-reality, where narratives unravel like mirages and characters hover between memory and invention. These images—stilled but never static—evoke the transience of old road movies, dissolving before conclusions can be drawn.
I work with expired Polaroid film, embracing its chemical mutations, its radiant unpredictability. The explosions of color and cascading light fractures are not flaws but revelations, shifting reality into something more fluid, more dreamlike. Within this alchemy, my characters are suspended in time, caught between the tangible and the ephemeral. Their stories resist resolution, leaving space for mystery, for longing.
In my images, reality is never fixed. The border between dream and waking life dissolves. The ordinary becomes enchanted, the past bleeds into the present. And within that uncertainty, the viewer is invited not to decipher, but to feel—to linger in the in-between, where truth is as mutable as the desert sky.
Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto -Triennale Esslingen, DZ Bank Kunstsammlung, Bombay Beach Biennale, DZ Bank Collection, Frankfurt.
