Susan Swihart
Object of Beauty is a personal exploration about aging. While I feel the pressure
to capture what once was and can never be again, I also find nostalgia, deep
emotions and joy in the many objects of my past. I hold onto even the most
fragile and damaged mementos, which carry special meaning to me. Some
remind me of a loved one that I am no longer able to visit with, while others are
links to memories I am afraid to forget. As my memories fade and I struggle to
remember, this project allows me to explore how we are formed greatly by our
past, but also reminds me to allow more kindness and acceptance in my pursuit
of the unattainable. That letting go of things can free one up for new experiences
and relationships.
Especially poignant in these times, when desperate to live without constraints,
I’ve become more aware of my desire to hold onto unnecessary things. As I
struggle to purge and make room to live more freely, I acknowledge my
limitations to protect the beauty I remember.
To create these still life vignettes, I use dolls as surrogates of myself and those
that are close to me, with objects that hold profound memories and connections.
The resulting imagery allows me to explore, with humor, the changes I’m
experiencing, while highlighting the beauty in its reality.

If Only
A personal narrative of self portrait work that explores the challenges of being a wife, mother, artist, daughter and friend in the middle of a crossroads, at the middle of my life, not quite sure who I am now or what direction I am heading. It’s a period that feels out of balance, a time where I struggle with the concept of aging and lost youth and the pursuit of having it all when I’m not really sure I want it. Often feeling that the person I thought I was has disappeared, replaced by familial needs and that slow and steady march through time as I shepherd my family forward. I am a participant observer in a life where I watch my children grow and take our place, while at the same time observe parents deteriorate. I’m lost somewhere in the middle with little room or time for personal growth or a clear understanding where I fit on the spectrum of my life. Not much time to reflect, but plenty of time...

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
cyan = blue
type = print
Cyanotype is a historic photographic processes, invented in 1842 and used by Anna Atkins–the first female photographer. The process involves coating watercolor paper with light-sensitive chemistry made of iron salts. Photographic negatives are laid on top, exposed in the sunlight, and then washed in water to develop into the deep Prussian-blue unique to cyanotypes. Brings a moment of beauty and conversation to any space.
