About the Item

Photograph from the "Swimming" series by renowned Spanish photographer Vari Caramés. It is one of his most iconic series, capturing different people bathing in pools, both in and out of the water. Caramés (1953, Ferrol) walks along the edges of the image. In his photographs, there are no certainties, only atmospheres. The "Swimming" series, in black and white, is a tribute to the vanishing moment. Floating bodies, fading lights, and escaping reflections. The photograph measures 68 x 83 cm and is framed. It is an analog photograph, printed on high-quality Hahnemühle cotton paper. It is on display in the "The Future Will Be Prehistoric" exhibition at the Manolo Eirin Gallery until September 20, 2025. Caramés's work operates from the uncapturable. In his "Swimming" series, water becomes photographic material: shadow, reflection, distortion. The black and white, far from neutralizing the image, accentuates its ambiguity. The figures swim, float, or disappear, suspended between the sunlight and the density of the water. Vari is heir to a poetic sensibility that we might associate with Robert Frank or Saul Leiter, but with a way of seeing closer to the spiritual. His photographs don't document, they evoke. In this exhibition, the pieces function as memories of a world that perhaps never existed, but which we nevertheless feel as deeply our own.
