Yasumasa Morimura – An Inner Dialogue with Frida Kahlo (Fairy Tale), 2001
C-print on canvas, signed and numbered 3/5 on label affixed to the reverse.
Measurements (with frame): W 124 × H 94.5 × D 7 cm
Exceptional work by Yasumasa Morimura (Osaka, 1951), one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary artists, internationally renowned for his photographic self-portraits in which he reinterprets and embodies iconic figures from art history and popular culture.
Executed in 2001, An Inner Dialogue with Frida Kahlo (Fairy Tale) belongs to Morimura’s acclaimed series of works in which he adopts the persona of Frida Kahlo, exploring issues of identity, gender, and cultural appropriation. By merging his own image with that of the Mexican painter, Morimura creates a dialogue that questions originality, authorship, and the construction of artistic mythologies.
The work is a C-print on canvas, signed and numbered 3/5, and is presented in its original artist’s frame, a solid wood structure covered in gold leaf, which enhances its aura and rarity.
Bibliography: Published in Aperture – Daughter of Art History. Yasumasa Morimura (2003), one of the most important monographs dedicated to the artist, further underlining the significance and collectability of this piece.
This artwork exemplifies Morimura’s unique artistic language, where humor, irony, and historical reflection converge, making it a landmark example for collectors of contemporary Japanese art and photography.
