About the Item

Hogan Seidel’s "Glimpses of Their Garden #1" is an abstract botanical photograph in vibrant cyanotype blue, printed as an 11 x 17 inch archival inkjet print on 13 x 19 inch fine art paper. This signed limited edition work of 5 combines alternative photographic processes with experimental darkroom techniques rooted in ecological practice. The image was created from black-and-white film developed using a plant-based eco-developer made from composted garden weeds, then contact-printed onto cyanotype-coated 35mm film. Inspired by Marie Menken’s Glimpses of the Garden (1957) and the quiet lyricism of weeds, the series was created during a residency at Walkaway House in North Adams, Massachusetts. "Glimpses of Their Garden" reflects on cycles of growth, decay, and resilience in both plant and human life. Weeds, often unwanted but persistently alive, become metaphors for queer ecological thought, challenging hierarchies of value. Developed from discarded organic material and printed onto leftover film, the process itself mirrors the work’s central themes: reclamation, reuse, and a reverence for what resists erasure. These images are both documents and offerings—an invitation to notice, to tend, and to remember. Hogan Seidel is a filmmaker and photographer whose work explores the unstable boundary between nature and identity. They specialize in analog processes, working across 16mm and Super 8 film, as well as medium and large format photography. Seidel uses techniques like botanical collage, photochemical abstraction, and handmade plant-based film developers, often sourced from invasive species. While their methods are grounded in eco-conscious experimentation, their themes are equally personal and political, touching on queerness, erasure, and transformation. They are interested in the failure of fixed categories. Dissolution, resistance, and instability become sites of possibility.
