About the Item

"My work is about respecting the beauty that remains and the poetry that is found." David H. Gibson is a lifelong photographer whose first contact with the medium was in his father's darkroom before he could read. Gibson received a B.A. from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, and an M.A. at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. His early work in theater lighting enhanced his photographic education which is largely self-directed. Valley House Gallery has shown his photographs since 1990, just after he had his first solo exhibition at the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. Since 1990, Gibson’s work has been featured in Aperture, Hasselblad Forum, Photo Technik International, PHOTOgraphic, and View Camera, and has been the subject of numerous books. His work took the grand prize at the International Art Competition at Yosemite Museum Gallery in California and been acquired by many museums, including the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, the Ballinglen Foundation in Ireland, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Gibson’s work has been exhibited at the AIPAD Photography Show (Wm. Floyd Gallery, New York), the Amarillo Museum of Art (Texas), the Amon Carter Museum (Fort Worth), the Art in Embassies Program (Dublin, Ireland and Lima, Peru), la Biennale Photographique: Terre Ciel Mer (Montpellier, France), the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), the Houston Museum of Natural Science, The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (Dallas), The Menil Collection (Houston), Photo-Eye Gallery (Santa Fe), the Special Photographers Company (London), and the Tyler Museum of Art (Texas). Edward Ranney is an internationally recognized photographer who has photographed the natural and man-altered landscape for over forty years. In 1980 Edward Ranney was awarded a grant from The Northern Arts Council of Great Britain to photograph throughout Cumbria, in Northern England, and to exhibit a selection of the resulting work at the Carlisle Museum and Art Gallery. The work extended into 1981, and the exhibition took place in 1982. This selection of photographs favors views of the open spaces of the hills, or fells, of Cumbria and Northumberland including Hadrian’s Wall, the fortified earthwork delimiting the northernmost Roman occupation of the British Isles.
