About the Item

A limited Edition Print by National Geographic Photographer Keith Ladzinski from his series “Rooted: The Importance and Beauty of Trees”. Over the last 10,000 years, the planet has lost over 1/3rd of its forests, some 5 Million square miles, half of that since the 1900’s. Tree’s are responsible for 3 of every 10 breaths of air we inhale, and provide shelter and habitat for countless species. Simply put, a world without trees would be bleak and inhospitable for terrestrial animals in a whole, they bring balance, beauty and stability to life here. Over the last century humans have cut down half of the planets rainforests for lumber and agricultural habitat. As heat index and drought conditions continue to increase, many trees are facing an ever increased threat of wild fire and access to fresh water. This series focuses on the beauty and hardships of trees around the world. California’s towering Giant Sequoias are among the oldest and tallest trees on earth. These unique trees are national treasures, remarkably specific in both ecosystem and environment and found only in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These endemic giants only grow on the western slope of the mountains at altitudes between 4,000 - 8,000ft. The largest drink upwards of 500 gallons of water per day, syphoning the water through networks within the heart wood to their high crowns towering nearly 300 feet above. They are a miracle in many ways, not only for their long lives that exceed 3,000 years, or the specificity of where they grow, but importantly that they weren’t deforested during the logging hay-day of the early 20th century where about 1/3rd were cut down. Their fire retardant bark can be as thick as 3 feet, limiting the usable wood which thankfully spared them from the hands of careless humans. Today, the remaining strong hold is ever at high risk of wildfire, it would be a huge loss to loose these magnificent wonders of nature, that seem as if they belong in a different time. This image here is of a Zen Zen, a sequoia of the Giant Grove, which I photographed on a stormy night while on assignment for National Geographic in 2016.
