About

Dye sublimated photograph on aluminum Kevin Frest’s distinctive approach explores the urban landscape finding scenery, bathed in saturated neon color, that shares a narrative about the electricity, vigor and emotion that is New York City after dark, and is true to form in Street Photography.  “Often, I visualize the feeling and scenery then I wait. New York City, which is unlike any other city in the world, then arranges the happenstance thereafter providing more substance and points of interest than one could ever anticipate.  Other works of mine are created from fast moving hand held shots in classic Street Photography. In my twenties I was experimenting with creating neon signs and artworks using neon as an element of the work.  We went on to collaborate with Erte (the father of Art Deco) to create a series of sculptural works called the Erte Luminieres which used neon to illuminate etched glass versions of Erte’s classic Art Deco designs.  Expanding on this concept we created many works, some of monumental size.” On the recognition of influential preeminent artists, Frest adds, “I have always been drawn to the work of American artist Edward Hopper.  He had a way of communicating the essence and feeling of the scene with simple and elegant compositions and figures.  My photographic god has to be Henri Cartier-Bresson. For like him I believe the true power of photography is the ability to capture the decisive moment that passing gesture or interaction that becomes universal and timeless.  Kevin Frest’s current work #YourMomentOfNeon is the vision inspired by these masters.  Night scenes are frequently lit by neon giving the compositions a signature color and vibrancy.  Compositions with simple and strong geometry bring the viewer’s eye into the story of the scene. Frest’s painterly expressions reveal latent Surrealist affinities and catch the decisive moment. Using a layering technique to create an amalgam of multiple exposures, a unique view of the atmospheric surroundings is realized. The final result are images depicting captured moments that are so fleeting but have the arresting ability to create a lasting memory. “We all live half of our lives at night and I hope these scenes bring up memories’ of your life in the urban landscape.” –Kevin Frest
