About the Item

Archival pigment print Signed and numbered, verso 20 x 32 inches 30 x 48 inches 40 x 65 inches 48 x 80 inches (Total edition of 15) This artwork is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. With the series, "Lost" (2003-2004), Nix and Gerber continue their investigation of the constructed landscape, this time examining feelings of isolation and loneliness. Like much of their previous work, this group of photographs blurs the line between truth and illusion. They subvert the traditions of landscape photography in order to create their own humorously dark world. Nix and Gerber’s images toy with romantic notions of landscape, and their lush, rich color and theatrical lighting magnify a sense of melancholy. The obvious artificiality of the scenes does not diminish the tension created in the photographs. In fact, this fake quality only serves to enhance the enjoyment of the illusion. Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber have been making art collaboratively for over sixteen years. Originally from the American Midwest, now based in Brooklyn, they construct meticulously detailed model environments and photograph the results. For the last decade they have found inspiration in their urban surroundings, imagining a future mysteriously devoid of mankind. Their miniature fake landscapes and interiors reflect a love of science fiction and dystopian entertainment (think “Blade Runner,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Logan’s Run”), an appreciation for great architecture, and an affinity with the Sublime painters of the Hudson River School. Their images of faux landscapes and gritty urban interiors have gained wide acclaim in both the U.S. and Europe, and Nix is a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow in photography.

Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber's series, "The City" (2005-2013) moves indoors to a variety of architectural interiors that could be found in our own urban surroundings. While much of Nix and Gerber’s earlier work was grounded in personal experience, this series exists more in the realm of speculation. These public spaces lie deteriorating and neglected while nature slowly reclaims them. The reason for their decline is unclear, but the effects are not. Floating Factory
By Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick
Located in Hudson, NY
archival pigment print 24 x 24 inches unframed This contemporary, surrealist style photograph was printed by the artistic duo, Kahn & Selesnick, in 2010. The print is part of their 'Mar: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea' series which features deserted landscapes in outer space. In this image, a mysterious and otherworldly mechanism floats through the Martian landscape. It is unknown who or what is operating it. With this imagery, the artists entice an imaginative narrative where the viewer is left to conjure up their own story. About the series: "Mars: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea" is Kahn and Selesnick’s first project to feature a female protagonist; a woman finds herself alone in a wasteland that appears to be Mars. It is uncertain how she arrived in this place, via spacecraft, through a fold in the space-time continuum or perhaps the landscape is a mental projection. Either way, it is clear that she has escaped an unnamed catastrophe on Earth. In a series of hallucinatory episodes she simultaneously explores the planet and builds a mock-life for herself from a combination of high-tech and stone-age materials. Mars is revealed to have ruined artifacts and monuments from a previous, or perhaps future, civilization. The remains of massive stone listening devices are littered about the landscape, leading us to wonder: is this a colony that has collapsed and lost touch with earth? How did its occupants become stranded? Or are these the nocturnal imaginings of a post-apocalyptic survivor? About the artists: The ultimate storytellers, who have been showing with Carrie Haddad Gallery for more than 20 years, are Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick...
