About the Item
A stainless steel Eagle gargoyle jets out from the Chrysler Building's 31st floor exterior. They were designed to pay homage to the Plymouth hood ornament. They represent movement and flight, embodying the iconography of the machine age. It is set against a shimmering, yellow-gold sunset reflection from the adjacent Grand Hyatt Hotel facade. What is unexpected about the photo is the arresting color relationships.
The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years. The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For over 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators.
The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.

Since 1969 Mitchell Funk has been photographing the Chrysler Building in dramatic and novel ways. This recent image incorporates the Chrysler Building's pointy neighbor, the supertall skyscraper One Vanderbilt. Its modern spire harmonizes with the 1930 soaring Art Deco icon.
