About the Item
Walk into the lobby of the Chrysler Building, and it does not look like this.
To the visitor's eye, it is somewhat dark and has a tight, constrained feel to it.
Photographer Mitchell Funk wanted to create a dialogue between inside and outside.
He shot the Chrysler Building's interior with a grandeur, expansiveness, and monumentality to harmonize with the building's exterior. To accomplish this, he chose the right location, the right angle, and then illuminated the space so it conveys the same sense of soaring Art Deco as viewed from the outside. Four starters, all dressed in black, look out into the space and give a sense of proportion to it.
The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years.
The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators.
The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
