About the Item

Before Long Island City blossomed into a landscape of high-rise residential development, it was a gritty industrial area. One of the iconic images of the LIC was four monumental smokestacks from an abandoned factory. Photographer Mitchell Funk viewed the smokestacks as less than utilitarian objects and envisioned them more as skyscrapers. He created this hybrid image in 1980, where a smokestack and a skyscraper coexist in the same pictorial space. He photographed them in silhouette to reduce them to simple shapes, achieving a feat of fantastic design. In the foreground, a time exposure of car lights leads the eye into his deeply impressive new vision of Midtown Manhattan. The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years. The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators. The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper The uploaded video on 1stDibs is coming up a bit off color.
