About the Item

The history of street photography has been characterized by a loose snapshot style where the central purpose was to capture random moments as they unfold in time. Little emphasis was placed on creating tight, formal compositions. Over the past 54 years, street photographer Mitchell Funk's groundbreaking contribution to the genre was to do street photography with the meticulous compositions and precision lighting that is usually the domain of studio photography. In this work, "Street Walkers", Funk elevates his distinctive style to a perfect artistic statement - where every pictorial element is in perfect harmony. The notion of capturing the " The Decisive Moment " still exists but as defined by Funk. He is an abstractionist while being a documentarian. Thirteen pedestrians form a line that echoes the street and architecture lines. They are rim-lit and leap out against a dark background. Each has their own personality, yet in rigid formation, they retain a mechanical quality that links them to the other non-human utilitarian elements of the picture. Signed, numbered 2/15, dated and titled, and lower right recto. Other sizes are available, and the fine art photograph is unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum. He has had more than 50 Photography Magazine Covers and has had covers on Newsweek, Fortune, New York Magazine and Life Magazine among others.

"Abstract, 6th Ave, NYC", photography, city, architecture, geometry, pattern
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Abstract, 6th Ave, NYC" is a color photograph on Etching Rag archival paper. It's a signed Edition of 20, available in sizes 16x24, 11x17 and 8x12 inches. It is a striking composition, and typical of the artist there are only a few elements at play but they are powerfully at play. The hard line geometry of the building, captured with angled and horizontal repeating shapes, shows small shards of blue sky. Shooting on the streets of New York, looking up and looking for often-missed city/sky collisions, Bob Krasner...
