Mitchell Funk
Yellow Moon Over Manhattan in the 1970s

1974

About the Item

A recurring motif in Mitchell Funk's work is the inclusion of an oversized moon. It signifies a celestial presence. This work, "Yellow Moon Over Manhattan," is an early example, but if one examines his full oeuvre, one will see that the big moon's presence anchors many of his landscapes from the late 1960s to 2024. What is particularly notable about this work is its simplicity of design and color relationships. The pale yellow hue of the moon counterbalances a kiss orange light that reflects off Grant's facade as both are integrated into a cerulean blue background. As with all of Funk's work, he is not just interested in recording objective reality. Instead he pushes color and changes form for expressive purposes. That being said, time tends to dilute the impact of innovation and experimentation. This work was created over 50 years ago and imploys the use of incamera multiple exposure. The skyline was shot at sunset and later that evening Funk changed to a 800mm lens and photographed the yellow moon. He then double exposed it into position on the same 35mm frame of Kodachrome as the skyline. The uploaded video is coming up light - use the still images as a reference for color. Signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, other sizes available, unframed. This work is printed on fine art Hahnemuhle paper. The color will vary from monitor to monitor. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time-Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum. He has had more than 50 Photography Magazine Covers and has had covers on Newsweek, Fortune, New York Magazine and Life Magazine among others.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
