About the Item

RISAKU SUZUKI (*1963, Japan) SAKURA 10,4-66 2010 Chromogenic print Sheet 120 x 155 cm (47 1/4 x 61 in.) Edition of 5; Ed. no. 2/5 Framed The Sakura (Japanese term for ‘cherry blossoms’) Celebration commences in early spring and has inspired artists since the reign of the Emperor Saga in 8th century Japan. The impressive blooming of the trees after winter symbolizes hope and strength, but as the petals fall, one is reminded of the fragility of beauty and life itself. Risaku Suzuki’s painterly photographs evoke the sensation of passing time within the permanence of the photographic frame. Suzuki captures the trees without a context or narrative, grasping the physical structure as the essence of the symbolism. The viewer is engaged with a place beyond the visible. By abandoning the ground and concentrating on the relationship between the blossoms and the sky, the works possess a weightless and effervescent air. Tight framing and large format printing eliminate the distraction of neighboring objects, yet maintain a vast landscape for the viewer. Attention is called to the world of motion beyond the frame, intimately connecting the photograph to an individual’s wandering gaze. Memorializing the perspective of a quick glance enables one to glimpse with a duration and depth impossible to realize in person. Risaku Suzuki was born in 1963 in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan and now lives and works in Tokyo. He is well known for his dedicated series of pictures from Kumano, Wakayama Prefecture, one of Japan's most sacred places and the home of Suzuki. One of Japan's most prominent photographers, Suzuki presents unmistakably Japanese subjects - like cherry blossoms and snow - which are both timeless and refreshingly new. ‘In my opinion, contemporary photography should be based on conceptual thoughts and committed to creation. It takes strength and enthusiasm to make photography your goal in life. The opinion that pictures of every day life, like those of his dog, his girlfriend and the like, are equal to creative expression, would be too undemanding. To really emphasize the ‘power of photography’, deep passion is central - in every age and situation - and the ability of a photographer to visualize a concept.’ – Risaku Suzuki — Landscape Photography, Nature, Tree, Colour, Japan, Light, Spring, Flower, Cherry Blossom, Sakura, Sky

  • Memories Are Made Of This - Contemporary, Polaroid, Landscape, Color
    By Julia Beyer
    Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Memories Are Made Of This (America) 2016, 40 x 40 cm, edition of 10, digital C-Print based on a Polaroid, hand-numbered and signed on the back by the artist. Artist Statement “Since my childhood days I always loved taking photos, but for unknown reasons instant film never really caught my attention. After I saw the works of a friend who happened to be a gifted Polaroid photographer, I was totally mesmerized and the desire to shoot with instant film constantly grew in me. But for as long as I can think music has always been my main preoccupation. I somehow always feel the need to create, but my focus shifted more and more from making music to instant photography and it grew into something much more fulfilling and pure. Sometimes, these two passions even come together when I am able to provide my photos for album artworks – this makes me incredibly happy. As I always have been very introverted and reclusive I often drift off into my own inner world. The dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres in my work are the visualization and the result of these imaginations. Another influence on my photography is my essential need to travel the world. But I am not interested in documenting the places I see like they are but rather love to create otherworldly scenes by adding the dreamlike texture of instant film, serving me as a needful escape from reality.” Artist Biography Julia Beyer is an analogue photographer from Germany. She mainly works with instant film to express her inner visions that often show dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres. After being more known for her musical endeavors as the singer of the dreampop band Chandeen, she began to delve into this photographic art form in 2014 and since then expands her portfolio continuously. Her work has been published in various international print and online publications. Since 2017, she is a member of the renowned "12:12 Project", a worldwide collective of female Polaroid photographers.
