Alex Avgud is a Russian-born photography graduate from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). His work is a continuous exploration of human resistance to mechanisms of oppression. Studies at KABK are very concept-driven. So in the last two years when the period of short assignments finishes, and you start working on long-term projects, the search for a theme or an approach can take a while. It was important to just get going somewhere without having doubts. Just to do what you want, and only after reflect on it. Don’t kill ideas too quickly, see on which journey they can take you—if you allow them to. In reflections of light. In a drop of sweat. In love and pain. In social developments and politics. In sculpture. In the nighttime. It can be almost anything, really.

View AllNude with Zinc Vessel - In Celebration of Pride Month
By Eric Kellerman (b. 1944)
Located in New Orleans, LA
Stone and Press Gallery is excited to offer several works in celebration of the LGBTQ community.
Eric Kellerman created this sensual nude photograph of a young nude woman with a large zinc vessel under her arm. It is pencil signed, titled and numbered 1 from an edition of 20. The photographer has stamped a red monogram next to his signature.
Eric Kellerman is a Briton who has lived near Nijmegen in the Netherlands for just over half his life. In 2008, he retired from academic life to spend more time on photography.
Kellerman works almost entirely in the studio and uses digital equipment from camera to print, although image manipulation is limited to darkroom-like processes. Specializing in the nude, he has a regular team of female collaborators, most of whom have a serious interest in movement (dance, drama therapy, athletics, martial arts).
Kellerman used to consider his work to be distant, abstract, melancholic, ‘unerotic’, despite its subject matter. Now he's not so sure. He emphasizes line, geometrical form, texture, implicit movement, and above all, chiaroscuro. He likes to create ambiguity in his photos, so that the viewer is sometimes unsure what part of the body is being looked at. In this way, he attempts to free the female body of its conventional associations.
He has been influenced by surrealism...

Brandenburg 2013 - In Celebration of Pride Month
By Daniel Kane
Located in New Orleans, LA
Stone and Press Gallery is excited to offer several works in celebration of the LGBTQ community.
In the famous story of the great 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, it is said she was given her first camera by her daughter as a way to occupy her time while her husband was away. In my case, as with so many others, the beginning of the story was equally fortuitous: Knowing I was about to spend a year abroad as an exchange student, my mother gave me my first camera, saying I would probably want to take pictures while I was away. Neither of us realized how important that little Instamatic camera would turn out to be, and now, 47 years and over a hundred thousand images later, I present the different portfolios shown here as a reflection of the work I have made since back then in 1970.
One by one, my favorite films and papers have been driven from the market by digital media, but I remain loyal to this day to analog photography, and the originals of all of these images were made with real film, either color slides...
